Default brake shiftlock problems

my '96 960 wagon has been having an increasing problem releasing the shifter from park even tho i apply the brake pedal and push the button. i have increasingly been using the 'shiftlock override' button to the point that it is almost constant. it used to be occasional, then would relase after a little bit or after a 2-4 tries. the time i have to wait (if it releases at all) and times i try are getting more frequent.

is this a relay issue or a mechanism issue? where should i start looking? will running the codes help? i guess i am going to have to get that done anyway since i have developed a rough idle with a 'check engine' light on.

ANY ideas would be appreciated! i am getting tired of using 2 hands to get it out of park!

There is a micro switch under the console that goes bad.

You have to pull the console to get to the switch.
