I have a volvo 1997 960. it happened today that the car ran in high speed even without pushing the gas pedal. when it is on park, the engine is still in high speed. it seems the computer is telling to give more gas. any ideas?

 

Check for a big Vaccum leak. Like the brake booster or something like that.

here is more info about my 1997 960. I tried to start it tonight and it started, but when I waited for a while on park or tried to put on gear, the engine speed go up and it was loud without pushing the padel. then, I see the white smoke came out of the exhust pipe. I remember that I had to put a little more coolant a few times this year. now, I think it might be water goes in to the engine. My check engine light has been on for about half year. at beginning I went to the dealer and was instructed to change C. converter, I though it was too expensive for OEM part so I put a off market one which worked for a while and then the check engine light came back on. I had it checked by the dealer. it seems that the off market C. converter may not take care of the check engine light. so, I just let it on since it didn't seem to have anything wrong. Now, the car is not drivable.

 

Check the oil and see if it looks like Choclate milk.
