Default Mass Air flow Problems need help!!

Got in my car today to drive home from work (15 miles) and when i started it the idle was very irradic stepping on the gas didn't help much. I turned it off, started again, and things were a little better. Put it in gear and proceeded to drive home on the highway and through town, and I had no problems. Got home and parked in the driveway. 5 minutes later I went out to put it in the garage and when I started it it had the same irradic idle. Pulled it into the garage and unplugged the MAF and everything smoothed out, this of course threw a code and the CEL came on. I cleared the code, cleaned the sensor and started the car back up, and it still ran like crap. Is my MAF toast? Is there anything I should check before I get a new sensor? my other dilemma is that I have to drive this car to Salt lake on Monday (420 miles) is this going to cause me problems if I cannot get things fixed by then?

I checked FCP and the sensor isn't very cheap, plus I need it by monday, which will not happen. Is this sensor used in any other models? The junkyard near me has a few 850's and 850 turbos, and I would be very happy if I could grab a sensor off of one of them. I really need my car to work this week!!![:@]

I the 850's are different.
Yes it kind of sounds like a mass flow sensor.

btw, it's a 93 960........and the meters out of the 850 are different tech? bummer. Well should I drive it how it is? it seems to run normal when I cruise down the highway. (which is what I'll be doing for about 420 miles on Monday night) Or should I unplug the sensor and drive without it? Will the engine get hurt either way? the only thing I can think of is the air/fuel ratio will get a little messed up, and I'll probably lose a few MPGs. Ugh this is such a bummer that it decided to do this this week, it could have happened a week ago, or next week and I would have been fine!! Maybe the Volvo is getting a little upset that I've put close to 4,000 miles on it in the last 5 weeks.

The Air/fuel ratio might get effected, and it is not a good thing if you end up burning a valve.

Just run with it...I would not take the risk

I really wouldn't chance it because it could start running so rich it might not move or move at about 10 MPH.

I know you don't want to be stuck with the car.

So, you're both saying I should leave it plugged in and go? or should I just head down to enterprise and get a one way rental? I am going to the airport afterall. The last thing I want is a burned valve, or having my engine get fu**ed in some way that will end up costing me $$$$. Gha! it's like $315 bucks for a new one on FCP too!

I found a MAF on ebay for 65 bucks with a lifetime warranty, courtesy of erie volvo, so I'm way stoked. It will be here later this week. I decided to play it safe and rented a car, so the Volvo will get a break this week. Hopefully by this time next week all will be well again.

I hope so too. I like the idea of a lifetime warranty. I guess stuff wears out a little quicker when you drive 44,000 miles in a little over 2 years in a car that is almost 16 years old.

got the new MAF installed in all of about 5 min, and the car runs great again. For anyone out there who needs a new one, I would definitely try Erie Volvo. Lifetime warranty on a rebuilt one, and it was only $75.00 shipped to my front door!

I just need to hear your view out! I just got my volvo s70 T5 and after a month I got it, it started giving the air flow meter problem. I got another air flow meter and it works for a while...but yesterday after travelling almost 164km, it starts giving problem again...like stopping on the high way or kick severally before picking up...on my way to office this morning, I have to remove the air flowmeter and since then the car has been working perfectly....however, what can I do to this issue...I'm just getting tired and it seems that has been the major problem of volvo generally...and what is volvo company doing about this to avoid loosing credibility on volvo products
