Default MPG problem, What's yours? 1997 960

Hello again,

Two questions.

Here's one question, what should I get for MPG? I only get 16-18 in city, and 20-22 HWY. Something has to be wrong. If you've read my other post, you'll see what has been done. However, New plugs, oil, air & fuel filter, flushed the tranny fluid.

What do you get for your 95-97 960 or 97-98 S90

I even suspected, it was because I was using Reg or mid-grade. So, I bump up to Super (93) for the last three fill-ups.

That's when I get the higher range.

Today, I broke down, and called Volvo Service, She wants me to bring it in. I don't want to spend another C-note for them to tell me my injector may be clogged, or something. I did put B-12 Chem fluid in it on my first fill-up when I bought the car a month ago.

My other question is, what is the name of the bushing shown below? It right under DS passenger door, next to the jack-lift spot. You should be able to see the cracks.

Thanks,

A fresh set of Bosch single electrode plugs and a cleaning of the throttle body will do wonders. I am assuming that your air cleaner is 'decent'.

OK, today I will clean the TB, but the plugs(Volvo), along with Oil, Air, and Fuel filters (all Volvo) were installed last month when I bought the car. I Have yet to have cleaned the injectors, but I thought putting B-12 in the tank would do that for me, it has in the past.

I am going crazy, I filled-up yesterday 18 MPG, if you checkout my post on brickboard, you will see what all I have heard and done.

Is it running? You said it is broke down did you get it running?

The bushing should be the rear lower control arm front bushing.

No it hasn't broke down.
It runs fine, my major problem is the MPG. Its extremley quiet, and smooth. Although, I believe the previous owner put non-nivomat rear shock on the Nivo system. The creaking is driving me insane.

When I stated "I broke down", meant I gave up, or gave into. I understand now what you were asking. The car is fine.

Sorry but I don't go to Brickboards.
But I assume you have no engine light on or codes in the system?

Have you made sure the O2 sensor is working properly?

Do you have any vaccum leaks?

I think normally they will only get about 20MPG.

The creaking might be sway bar bushings or another bushing.

The bad part is the rear suspension is a pain to work on.

I did confirm the vac leaks, but not the o2 sensor. I found out about the suspension the hard way. Do you think 20 MPG is good when 90% of my driving is all highway? Doing the same trips in my 740 I get about 27MPG. I think this is what I am disappointed with.

With a bigger tank, is seems like I am going further, but when I fill-up, I see I am spending more per mile, by alot.

I would think you should get like 23 to 25 with all highway driving.

Check out the O2 and make sure it is working properly.
Fix if not done already all the vacucm leaks.

Then see from there.

Thanks, I haven't gone that route. Someone told me about a thermostat in the air box. Should I check that out also?
I haven't had time this week to check for it, but I think I may check both o2 sensors.

On the 960's they really aren't a problem. You can check it.
The early 240 and 740 had the air box thermostat problems.

Great topic here!

I also was shocked with my mpg! I also own a 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT and I average around 22 mpg heavy city driving and around 27 to 30 mpg highway (depending on my crusing speed). I just got a 1996 960 with less than 100k miles and I'm getting 16 mpg city using regular. I all ready replaced the air filer, changed the tranny fluid with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and I'm driving in economic mode (which makes me crazy because tranny sometimes goes up and down a gear until I adjust gas). I do understand that better octane rating improves how the mixture burns and thus improving the over all engine performance with increased mpg but is it really worth to pay more for better octane rating? What gas are you my freinds using in your cars? Also, which plugs do you recommend for the Volvo and should I also change the fuel filter?
