I just bought a used 960 auto transmission with a label on the body which read T94LR-85562 and P1208786. Is this a 1994 960 transmission?

I asked the Volvo dealership to tell me which year of 960 the transmission was from. The dealership was unable to tell me.

I believe that there are experts on this forum who can help decipher the code and determine the year of this transmission.

Since the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is specific for the certain year of the 960, I believe that it is good to have the corresponding transmsision year for the TCM?

By the way, the transmission fluid was light brown and not red. Is there any light brown transmission fluid that is used on a volvo 960 transmission OR the transmission I just bought is Not good? I bought this tranny as a spare

Any idea or comments are greatly appreciated?

 

If a Volvo dealer can't tell you, well... you are not gonna get joy here.
I'd keep calling other Volvo dealers, hopefully some old timer can get you the info.

 

T94LR is Aisin Warner's model number. Aisin Warner is the maker of the Transmission. I suspect 85562 is the serial number. I know that the P number is Volvo's part number.

I don't know if you could find the date of the manufacture. I do know that all 960s transmisions (AW 30-40) have identical internals, from 1991 on. Incidentally, most of the internals are the same as for the Lexus LS400.
