Default no speedometer

I have a 96 960 that has a problem with the speedometer. It comes and goes. Sometimes it will not register at all until the engine hits 3500 rpm and shifts out of first. Most of the time if you start off slow the transmission shifts as it should and the speedometer works. I was told by a volvo dealer service manager that the pickup ring in the differential is loose. He said to take out the fill plug and test with your finger if the cage was loose. If it was and that was what he thought was the problem, to take the cover off and use a punch to reattach it to the gear. I looked and cannot find a fill plug and cannot see how you could take off the cover without dropping the whole rear end. As this is a multi-link rear end ,that would seem to be most difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions?
