Default petroleum jelly on oring?

Hi all...I was replacing the in tank fuel pump on my 88 245 and looking at the Bentley manual instructions and it calls for petroleum jelly on the sealing o ring. Doesn't petroleum eat up rubber? or does it depend on the rubber. Also been talking to auto shop guy and is Vaseline considered petroleum jelly?

I'm looking at a jar of Vaseline and it says 100% pure petroleum jelly...um so guess I'll use Vaseline in there...
