I had one for my bmw that I custom made from 3" 45 degreemandrel bent pipe with a k&n cone filter, it would fit perfectlty but was lost in the crash (which is why I have a volvo now!) I'm not looking for performance but rather fuel economy I'm actually looking for where to find this pipe, and is there any down sides to taking off the top of the air box? I see a silver tube attached to the air box below the filter, what does this go to? Some sort of emmisions?
Any other tips for increased mpg, besides cruise control, high tire psi and economy mode?
My car is the 96 960 sedan with 155k auto...
Thanks!!!

1. Get your car up and running to fresh from the factory standards. That will help with the efficency of the car.
2. If you want an intake keep your stock one. I say this because on Volvo's it is the best setup. With an open air filter even with a heatsheild you will suck in HOT AIR. This is a NO NO, BAD.

The cars in New england; I dont car about hot air under the hood as its quite coldandI mainly just drive on the high way(lots of air circulation while driving).I just want some more mpg. I set the cruse at 65 with the car in "E"conomy mode and get only about 21.5 mpg. I do little to no city driving. And what do you mean by "factory standards"?

Doesn't matter if it is cold outside or not. Your engine is still hot. Still produces loads of heat. With a cone filter you wont see increased MPG. You will see less due to the massive heatsoak.

I have a 1993 960 wagon, and with new bosch platinum plugs, new air filter, new o2 sensor, and clean oil I get 26.5 MPG when I drive 65 with the cruise control on. If you haven't already, replace these things and see if that helps.

this is not saying much at all. who drives 65? car's still in closed loop w/ air/fule ratio closely monitored by o2 sensor, blah blah blah. in many cars, 65mph in the top gear is the ideal condition to achieve "best" mpg, but absolutely does not correlate to real world conditions. to OP: as all modders know, open air intakes almost never = to increased gas mileage due to psychological reactions to mods.
