Strange AC problem

My AC makes noise but no cold. I also tried charging it to no avail. I can hear the fan blowing also but no air comes out no matter where the air direction **** is turned with the exception of a tiny hot breeze out of the window de-fog vents. Are these related problems or something completely different from one another? Any repair advice?

could the drain lines be clogged? i had a similar issue last summer, and it turned out the lines had gotten clogged with leaves, pine needles, debris from parking outside all of the time...
understand all I know about cars is where to put the key to start the car, where the radio on/off switch is, and where the gas tank lid is. so if this is off the wall, my sincere apologies.

I suspect vacuum supply to it might be the problem. Controller gets its vacuum from the engine's intake (i.e. in the engine compartment); from the vacuum tree, to be exact. Check out these docs and photos here.
If the problem is not vacuum, it can be electrical; solder points on these Controllers sometimes crack and unit becomes whacky. For a DIYer, who can flow some solder, repair is easy.

That's a very good point. If intake screen for the blower is clogged by leaves, yes, air output would be reduced.

volvo for life! : i had the same problem on my '96 960, and after trying all the possible test, was left with option of replacing the three vacuum valves? one final check was done and found out that the fan was working in reverse: pulling air instead of blowing out!. i replaced the fan and voila! i have cold air blowing out of all the vents. i drove the car for many miles untill the fan was replaced. it is worth the check, since i would hear the fan on, i always though that is was working correctly!
good luck and give it a try!

Hi Henry, yes, and it caused a waterfall of water to pour out from under the dash. it wasn't pretty. god bless my mechanic, he knew immediately when i went in, that is why i swear by the man today!! As far as I'm concerned he can do no wrong. he is not the fastest guy in town but his work is great and his prices are reasonable, so i'm a happy camper.
