Default Volvo 960 Engine Swap

Hi everybody, I am new here...

I am having problems with my 1996 volvo 960. I have decided that I want to add a turbo to my 960 but I was reading on some forums and I thought that it would be way too much work and little gain to add a turbo to the 960 motor. On to the main subject...

As you have just read I want to be able to do more with my volvo. I have come to the conclusion that I want to swap the motor. The engine bay is large enough for practically any motor and it would also be cheaper to swap the motor rather than to fix the one I already have in the car. There would also be a large power gain from doing the swap. I posted this because I would like to know if anyone has ever swapped the 960 motor. I want to know what motor would be the easiest motor to install with a sufficient power gain at the least expensive price...I am leaning towards the nissan rb25det motor that can be found in the rwd skylines. It would be half the price as fixing the motor that I have in the car right now but then I have to pay for installation or do it myself. I am wondering if this is even possible. I would like to know from you guys because I think that you know more about volvos than I do . Please post your ideas / experiences you have or have had...

Thanks,
Tom

Haven't really worked or heard much about the 960's.
But if it was my Project I would do a 5.0 Mustang engine into it. Or explorer 5.0 or Lincoln mark8 engine.(All HO engines)
It will be a little work but worth it in the End. Try to find a wrecked car so you have everything you will need.

Thats all the advise I can contribute.

Also check this out if you haven't already seen it.

The S80 motor is pretty much the exact motor.
The turbo's will fit on the 960 engine. But holes will have to be drilled for the return lines.

I have a 5.0 Ford in my Ex-940 Turbo Wagon. The 5.0 is out of a 2000 Ford Mercury Mountaineer. On the dyno, in the condition it was delivered, it put out 198.18 HP with Max Torque of 253.54. A chip was installed and the HP went to 219.28 and 282.60 Max Torque. The car gets 19.2 miles per gallon, which is the same or a little better than the turbo charged Volvo four. If you are interested look up Converse Eng. on the internet, he has a kit to install a 5.0 Mustang motor in the car or will do a turn key in house using the Exployer/Mountaineer motor.

Please contact me for additional information concerning this swap.

what size is the s80 motor and what year is it from? how much trouble would it be to swap a 960 motor with an s80 one? i was also thinking, what about an 850 t5 motor?

The S80 Twin turbo motor came out in 1999.
They lasted I believe till 2004 or 2005.
You would need to get the motor and maybe install a stand alone fuel system.

Or install and use the 960 computer with some upgrades done to the computer.

You would also have to make sure the mounts would bolt on as well.

The S80 is front wheel drive and the 960 is rear wheel drive.

how difficult would it be to change a front wheel drive engine into a read wheel drive 960?

I haven't compaired the engines side by side but as long as the mounts mount in the same place it should work fine.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a 960 Wagon (1997) for sale with a good engine - 112,000 miles. 19 mpg means it doesn't qualify for cash for clunkers. It's got a few dents, non-working air, power seat, sunroof but it drives well.
