Default 1993 850 burning coolant

Have any of you guys run into this? When the engine is cold it doesn't smoke from the exhaust. After it's warm, it definately smokes coolant from the exhaust. The engine oil is milky as well.
I'm guessing it's best case, a head gasket, or worst case, a cracked head or cylinder wall. Any guesses, or should I just start disassembly and hope for the best?
Thanks in advance,
Dave in Whistler, B.C.

Hi Dave,

I can think of two possibilities:

1. Head gasket, as you noted.
2. Oil cooler line rupture in the radiator (not likely).

Unless the engine has had history of overheating, I don't believe there is a crack in the head or cylinder wall. I would do the following tests:

1. Cooling system pressure test.
2. Compression test.

These test would reveal pretty much all you need to know. If you have the tools & equipment, great but if you don't, have it tested at a dealer/shops that specialise in Swedish/European makes. Should you decide to have it done at a dealer, do not let them take advantage, as they like to sell you major parts.

I hope you can get it fixed.

Sounds like a headgasket. Luckily on the i5 it isn't too much of a pita, everything is right on top.

Follow JPN's advice as he knows what he is talking about. I'm betting head gasket as well. I would not drive it until it is fixed for fear of overheating it.

Thanks for the input, guys. I picked the car up as a parts car, so am not driving it. I'll pursue the head gasket program as soon as I get the time.No way am I giving that job to a dealer!!!
