Default 1993 volvo 850 non turbo engine swap question

hello, i dont own a volvo 850, but i just got the engine for free, and i was wondering if i can take a turbo/set up etc.the ecu/engine harness from a junk yard.

My plan was to get the 2.3L 20 valve DOHC turbo i5. but becuase i can get this non turbo for free, can i just get the turbo setup from a junk yard, and have it work as if it was the turbo engine in the first place?

also what size tranny does it have? thanks for your time.

I don't fully understand what all you're getting for free and doing with it.

My .02:
Find a '94 or later because many '93 parts are unique to '93.
Unless you have to have a project, buy a turbo car to start with.
You want a free-flowing exhaust with a turbo, so exhaust may be different.
I'm not sure about transmission.

Okay so i got the engine from a 1993 volvo 850, the non turbo.

Im going to put it in my bmw e30, so im asking if i can get all the tubing i need for a turbo and the ecu from the same 94 and a wiring harness. everything else i need etc. to make a turbo run, cheaper then buying a 94 to 96, if im correct?

That's probably a downgrade. I highly doubt any of the wiring will be the same along with other parts. I've never heard of anyone attempting that. The 93's are very different than all of the other models. The transmissions in Volvos are M56L and 96+ M56H's. I assume the transmission in the 93 would be a M56L.

I guess go for it if you want, I will be surprised if it all works out.

yeah bmw = rear wheel drive, bmw's m20 the one is the 325is is a straight 6 with 170-190 hp. the b5254s that's in the volvo 850s is the same engine that's in the 1989-1992 audi quattro e2. Its lighters and with the right cams, exhaust, chip, boost, ill have 300hp in a lighter engine, also the b5245s runs for ever, it seems like having 5 cylinders balances out the best, not to mention the gutted, e-30 weighs about 1000lbs less then the volvo 850. and not to knock volvo but bmw has the best handling ever, combined with what i think is one of the best engines ever. I'm thinking it will turn out to be exactly what i want. Plus the fire spitting b52 is just plain out awesome. check out this video

so far Im into this engine for nothing.
Earlier today i stripped it down to the block and it looks like its been taken very good care of.

Adding a turbo to the NA motor would not be a great idea IMO. I would first try and get the engine in the E30 and see how it runs stock, then take it from there. Let us know how it goes.

The na engines use different cams and pistons, not sure if the heads are different. The compression in the na engine would be too high to add a turbo, you would need to replace them. There is also many other external parts that are different. Your best bet would be to have a donor turbo car to get all of the parts off of, but why not just use the turbo engine?

If you got the engine for free, you should have just sold it and used the money towards a turbo engine.

It will be more expensive to turbo a non-turbo Volvo motor. If you have to have a turbo motor, start with one. If you want cheap hp in your BMW, look at small block V8 swaps into that chassis. I put a 302 in my RX7.
