1994 volvo 850 turbo problems
I bought my 94 volvo like 5 months ago and i love the ride it had 250,XXX on it and it had new
shocks and it was treated very well, the turbo was leaking and the mechanic patched it with
oil and it seamed to seal it up but the car smells like oil if i run the turbo to hard.
QUESTIONS:
But does anyone else get a oil smell if they hit the turbo to hard?
The car also seems to pull one way or another they said it might be the sway bar?
And the enviromental light on the dash stays lit?
If anyone can help me i would appreicate it my email is Tangle135@hotmail.com
i live in edmonton alberta canada there is only 2 shops but cheaper parts were can i find them
little hints on fixing small problems, if cheaper parts on internet and are trustworthy i will take
them i am tired of waiting 2 weeks for one little bolt or screw.

I'll take a stab at a couple of your questions. No, I do not get an oil smell when I hit the turbo on our 95. It sound like you still have an oil leak somewhere. THe pulling to one side could be a sway bar, but also it could be the front end needs to be aligned. Are the tires wearing evenly on the front. If it pulls to one side when braking, it is a brake issue.
Good luck

No oil smell here either. The turbo return line might be leaking.
Is the pull under hard acceleration only? If so the that is kind of normal called torque steer.
Have the engine codes pulled and see what they are.
Or pull them your self.

Killstat, where have you been going for your parts? I live in Edmonton also. I have zero problems getting any hard to find part from Anglo Canadian Volvoand it has never taken more than two days, but you'll pay dealership prices. Most of my parts have been ordered through FCP Groton and/or Ebay. Yes, you'll wait a week or so, but I've had zero problems there.
As Tech has already suggested, pull your own codes and post back. But I'm still not clear on what you are saying when you said your mechanic "patched it with oil"... what did he patch? My thought unfortunately is if you are punching the pedal, you are getting the start of oil blow-by as the smell you are experiencing.

Well i fixed the oil problem by putting in a "special oil" and they run the engin and the oil seals any leaks in the turbo.
And parts are kinda hard to find, the hard thing is finding a shop that will work on it and not having to pay 120 bucks a hour.
Thanks for all the answers i am taking them very seriously and using the tips i got.

You should probably check out Sandy Lane Auto on Argyll road. They tend to be cheaper than the dealerships. Other than that, you'll find a lot of "how-to's" around here for you to learn yourself. But again, you really shouldn't have any trouble getting the parts if you're going through FCP Groton or Ebay, or for that matter, the dealership. I haven't yet.

i also have a 94 850 turbo with about 210,000 miles on it, i do get a little bit of an oil smell inside when i run the turbo hard, i guess as my dad explained to me was the the turbo was passing a little bit of oil as the washers and parts of the turbo age. i'm getting my turbo rebuilt, maybe that's what you have going on.

killstat, would you kindly like to inform the rest of us forum members just what the name is of this magic potion that stops oil leaks?

Yeah, I don't want it to sound sarcastic, but I was thinking the same thing and didn't write it... I'm almost thinking someone took advantage of Killstat with a snake-oil sale of some kind.

The problem with a oil sealent is quote: "I assume you're talking about "stop-leak" products.
They are designed to cause the seals to soften and swell up - they might slow the leak for a short time, but the seal was either worn out or hardened up to start with, and after the additive, it'll be both worn out and soft - and some of the seals that didn't have a concern will now be swollen up and possibly distorted out of shape - and they, too, will eventually start leaking also.
Best just to replace the leaking seal."
