Default 1995 850 sedan rear window glass molding.

Hello Volvo Forums folks,

The rear window glass of my 1995 Volvo 850 sedan was smashed by vandals last night while sitting in my driveway.

I've found a used replacement windshield at a local junkyard for $100, but I'm guessing that it probably won't come with usable molding, so I'm trying to order molding for this car.

My nearest Volvo dealer is three hours away in Minneapolis, and quoted me a price of about $53 for each of the top and bottom moldings. Does Volvo make a molding kit for this? Are the top and bottom molding pieces sold by Volvo the only pieces I'll need for my glass replacement guy to do the work?

Any tips or advice is very welcome.

Thanks!

Best Regards,
Lane R. Ellis

Not sure why you would need to replace the moldings unless they cracked. Volvo will not sell you moldings, you will have to get them from a stealer. They probably can be installed later.

Thanks, rspi. I'm not going to be doing this myself, but have a mobile glass guy who has been recommended by a friend of mine. This glass guy first checked to see if there was a rear-glass installation kit for the '95 850 sedan, and said that he'd found there was not such a kit. He told me that since my rear window is completely cracked all the way to all four edges (he came and looked at my car) he probably wouldn't be able to save the moldings, and that when the junkyard people use a wire to melt out a salvage window they usually damage the moldings, so that I'd need to order new ones. I got a salvage window and maybe I'll have him come and look at it and try to re-use the existing molding. Thanks again -- I'll let you know how it goes.

My glass installer guy thinks the molding will probably have been urethaned in strongly by the factory and that he'd have a hard time trying to save the back-grass moldings.

Does anyone know if this back-glass molding is one continuous strip/gasket, or is there a top and a bottom part like the Volvo dealer I called told me?

Any recommendations for a Volvo dealer parts department anywhere in the U.S. with someone who knows their stuff who can help me out so I order the right molding?

Thanks for any help.

Best Regards,
Lane

All of them should know, however, some have better prices than others and are good at sending you the correct parts. I like to use University Volvo in Charlotte NC.

Well, after calling around to various Volvo dealers (stealers...) it appears that I can't buy just the rear moldings for a 1995 Volvo 850 sedan, and can only get them when buying an entire new backglass assembly. When I went to order the moldings, the dealer that had quoted me a price on them said they were only available for the wagon and not the sedan.

I guess I'll have to have the glass installer do the best he can re-using the old ones, unless anyone has another idea.

Thanks again all.

Best Regards,
Lane

I know this is an old post but I am wondering how the used window install ended up.
I have a busted rear sedan window and am facing similar issues.
I was looking at getting a used one from the yard but depending on your experience I might just buy new

I ended up getting a complete backglass assembly from a junkyard, and the mobile glass repair guy was able to install it without any problem. The sad thing is that, although I checked the backglass when I bought it at the junkyard, it somehow developed a crack on the ride home -- maybe I transported it without properly cushioning or supporting it. Sigh. Since then I haven't had a read defroster because of the crack.

Pulling the glass out and installing it stresses the glass. You're best off using new glass since it will be more flexible than one that's had years of UV ray exposure; that ages the glass making it more brittle and susceptible to cracking.

Yeah I guess I will just get a new one from Volvo but $590 really hurts my wallet when a junk yard window is $30
Thanks so much for the info!
Another question, when you pulled the window did the seal or plastic trim piece stay in good shape?

Ah, that must have been what happened, gdog.

Ded137t5r, the junkyard that removed the backglass I got did a good job preserving the old moulding and trim, so my glass installer didn't have any trouble installing it. I guess the junkyards use some sort of hot wire to melt the window out, I believe I heard. Good luck to you.

Yikes! That's got to be the dealer price; tried the aftmkt glass shops? They should be about half that.
