Unhappy 1996 850 Turbo Check engine light

Hey fellas, how's it going? Need a little help. Just acquired a 1996 850 turbo with 121,700 miles. The car sat in a garage for the last 9 years. When I bought it there were no check engine light on, but after 2 weeks and All the work I did to get it ready for inspection, the morning I was going for the inspection the check engine light came on. Just my luck. So I took it to autozone and the code is infamous P0440. Evap system. So as mostly everyone says it's the gas cap, I doubt it, since when I open it I hear air hissing. So I want to figure this out an fix it, but I ran out of time on the inspection. Many on YouTube say just disconnect the battery for 2 minutes and it will be reset and give enough time to go pass inspection. I've tried 2 minutes, 45 minutes and 24 hours, also touched the negative and positive cables while off battery as some say and every time I start the car the light is still there. My luck again? It works for all other makes but Volvo? Some one please shed some light. Thank you!

Disconnecting the battery on an OBD2 car ('96 MY on) will not reset a code. Did you ask AZ to reset it?

And if the problem is a hard failure, it will just set the code again..

agree with gdog, disconnecting the battery won't clear the code. First step is to inspect the vacuum lines/hoses from the engine back to the EVAP cannister (in the rear). Not uncommon for the tubing to leak/tear in the back going into the cannister. Then you can address what you find and ask if AZ or an indy can do a reset for you

Thumbs up Update

Thanks fellas, so here's what I did. Invested $20 on a obd2 scanner and cleared the code myself. Now I'm just waiting for the mil to be ready so I can pass inspection. Like I said I will figure out what the problem is and fix it. For now I just need to pass inspection.

Curious if the NJ inspection reads the OBD to see if the codes were recently cleared or if they simply check for the CEL... post up how this works out.

Talking Passed Inspection

Alright, so I decided to just go to the dmv for inspection today, I'd figure there wouldn't be many people there today and I was right, in fact I was the only car there hahaha anyway, it passed inspection!! And now I can move on to getting other things done, like my odometer decided to stop working on my way to the dmv today. Great! Already looked it up though, should be just the little gear. And Thanks to Robert and all his videos !! I'm taking your advice on the video about post purchase. First thing I'll do is the timing belt, then the Pcv system plus j and L hoses. Awesome, thanks all that replied. Merry Christmas and talk to you guys soon!

P.S. Mt6127, I don't know if they connected to the obd, I was talking to a guy I used to work with That works at the dmv now, It was a very quick inspection, the only thing I saw them doing was checking the gas cap.
