1996 volvo 850 glt non turbo engine light
hi all ! i have a 1996 volvo glt non turbo with 180000 miles. i just bought it and it was running great. then all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the car spudders when running. i took it to get looked at by a somewhat mechanic and was told that the # 4 cylinder had low compression. does anyone know if it may be something else a little cheaoer to fix or if it is even worth fixing. how good are these 2.4 engines? thanks

RE: 1996 Volvo 850 GLT non turbo engine light
Greetings,
CEL (Check Engine Light) is chronic to some Volvos, including the 850s, and a minor stuff can trigger the light. Didthe mechanicactually use a compression tester, or did you not see him work on your car? I would make it a habit to observe technicians while they work on your car. I would patronise either a dealer or an independentshop that specialises in Swedish/European makes and make them allow me to be in the shop. I would avoid generic garages/franchise shops, as they may not have sufficient knowledge/equipment to properly diagnose & service Volvos.
Visit a local auto parts store to see if they do free diagnostics service, using an OBD-II scanner (On-Board Diagnostic scanner, a hand-held tester that can "talk" to the computer in your car to see what triggered CEL). They can give you the code & the problem. I know AutoZone does it for free (and I usually buy a quart of oil, etc... as a courtesy).
The engines in 850 are known to go over 300,000 miles, if proper care is taken (many people don't). Andthe non-turbo engine (B5254) was designed by Porsche,if I remember correctly. It is hard to believe thatone of the cylinders hassuddenly lost compression; it may be as simple as a fouled spark plug, faulty ignition wire/connections, etc... I would check the ignition system first.
I hope this helps. Also, since this is the new members' greetings area, try posting the same question in the 850 forum; people there have great amount of knowledge and can help you better. This forum is really quiet and not many people come here.
Good luck,
JPN
