I have a 1996 850 non turbo sedan 43K miles and the temp and fan positions function properly. The car is stuck on the upper defrost mode only regardless of where you position the vent switch? Has any one els had this problem and if so where should I start looking? Thanks, Gerard

 

Did you pull the **** off and turn the spindle (that the **** fits on) with a pliers? If that works then the **** is bad.

I had to replace all my heater ***** because the flat on the internals of the **** that mates with the flat on the spindle rounded out. If that's the case, replace the ****(s) (unfortunately dealer item) and you're good to go.

 

I have the same issue, and I did replace my control module on the dash as I have the Auto. one and still does it!

 

Assuming you have an ECC, chances are it is a bad floor / defrost damper motor or the shaft has split. Here is a link to a thread that has a great picture of the split shaft:

I did pull the vent motor and move selector and it will move manually through all positions. Is the a way to test for power at the plug to see if it controller or ECC on dash? Thanks
