Default 1996 Volvo 850T, problem starting eng and mileage doesn't update.

ok, I'm getting reports from SWMBO that her Volvo is having problems starting a few times in the last month, it's difficult to start and it will take 15 seconds, or a few minutes sometimes. Her car doesn't get much maintenance, what could be the cause of this problem? How do I solve this. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
John

mileage is at 150, I believe. The last tune up...as in what? This is a new/used car, when she first got it, I had the timing belt/serpentine belt done, new fluids, etc etc, that was about 6 months ago. And yea, the check engine light is always on, even right after the tune up, 2 minutes, than it goes off. The guy who sold it to me said every volvo he ever sold was like this.

Cheers,
John

You much mean Service light and not Check engine light.
By tune up I mean Dist. cap, rotor ,wires, and spark plugs.
If you look at the ignition wires if they are OEM they will have a date stamped on them in either White or Yellow.

ahh, no the service light isn't on. Only the check engine light, my mistake. I don't think the spark plugs were changed, is it as simple as just unscrewing the old ones and putting in new ones? Is there a page on how to do this? The distributor cap/rotor/wires...is there a picture of that somewhere on this forum so I have a point of reference?

I saw the page on fuel pump for problems starting...could this also be suspect?

NO-START CONDITIONS (Fuel System-Related):
This is one of the most annoying problems, but please note that it is not as serious as loss of brakes while the car is in motion. Anyway, in the case of 850, often this problem seems to be due to either a faulty fuel pump or the pump relay. The relay seems to be repairable with soldering, if not you can buy a new one for approx $52.50~$95 as of June 2007 (OEM or K.A.E ), depending on model years and whether your car is turbo or non-turbo.

*In the case of fuel pump, you have some options but the economical & reliable way is to replace the pump insert only; this is the core of the pump which consists of an electric motor & impeller assembly, hoses and clamps. There is wire-soldering involved as well. If the fuel pump is determined to be at fault, you can either go with OEM (Hella-Pierburg) or an aftermarket unit on Ebay. To check the fuel pump, have someone in the driver's seat and turn the key to ON (not the "START") position. You should hear the pump running. If not, try tapping the bottom of the tank. If this rejuvenates the pump, it may be a loose electrical wire or may be in need of a new pump insert. The OEM pump is at $125 as of June 2007 at FCP Groton, and Ebay pump is about $70-$80. If you feel like replacing the pump insert by yourself, I would highly suggest that you have a bottle of Class-B fire extinguisher, and do the work at a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling the fuel vapour, which can cause death. Also, do the work with an assistant. Remove ALL sources of fire, sparks, etc... If you have the slightest concern about the work, entrust it to a reputable shop;

It is possible about the fuel pump but usually either they work or they don't.
Unscrew the black cover on the top of the engine that says Volvo. Then pull the ign. wires out to change the plugs. Follow the wires to the Dist. cap. Just before the cap if the wires are OEM you will see the writing I spoke about it will be 4 numbers the month and year they were made.
