I checked the wires from the sending unit to the gauge and their fine, it could be my gauge and if so, does anybody know what after market gauge I can use with a gauge pod. thanks for the help

The sensor range is from 7.5 Ohms to 327.5 Ohms, depending on how much fuel is in the tank. The fuel sensor is not in the fuel pump, it is its own unit and it is located next to the fuel pump, more toward the center of the car.
Depending on the year of the car ('93-'95) there are diagnostic test you can run on the instrument cluster from socket A-7.

Grab a copy of the factory service manual from here:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow.../Volvo_850.zip
Once you unzip it see the file named instrument panel.pdf. It will guide your through the test procedures.

In your case I think I would check salvage yards for a replacement and pick up a newbase seal.
