Default 850 shut down

Hey guys,
I had a little problem today. My car shut down on me. It started bucking and I pulled over, reved the engine and it was fine. I took off and 2-3 minutes it started again, and this time it shut down. I waited like one min and started it up and it ran like nothing happened. To it for drive tonite and it hesitates, sometimes you press the gas and you don't feel any acceleration and then suddenly it just jumps and takes off.

Any help will be gladly appreciated

Hi Riculus,

Could you specify the model year? There may be some fault codes set in the ECU. We need to know what codes have been set.

It is a 95 850 Glt Sedan. Was thinking and I had a problem like that 4 years ago and it was the cam semsor or crank sensor. I should check those out.
Let me know what you guys think

It seems the ECU is confused by sensor input(s).

Most common items:

- Faulty MAF sensor
- Faulty fuel pump
- Faulty fuel pump relay
- Faulty fuel system relay
- Faulty ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor
- Etc...

Aahh, have them all; see attached.

3rd wave.

Was your 850 turbocharged, BTW? Some codes may be different for turbo & NA.

Hi Guys,
I pulled the codes(did not know it was so easy to do , Thanks for the 411 JPN and Tech)
here we go
5-2-2
1-5-3
2-3-2
4-1-3
1-2-1

Ok, Went to the local Auto Zone and got these codes
P0102
P0138
P0141
P1418

Oh it shut down on the way there (about 3 miles) started it up immediately and worked as normal on the ride home
Which one of these would make the car shut down.
What is my next step now. Are any of these repairs DIY for a rookie.

here we go
5-2-2 // Rear HO2S Preheating
1-5-3 // Rear HO2S signal missing; would say your rear O2 sensor is either bad or unplugged.
2-3-2 // Long term fuel trim, idling, rich
4-1-3 // EGR Temperature Sensor Signal Incorrect or Missing
1-2-1 // MAF sensor signal missing or faulty; there's a diag procedure to troubleshoot the MAF if you're interested; JPN may have already posted it...

The P codes are OBDII; probably the OBDII equivalent of the DTC. I used to have a link for the P codes but can't find it now.

Your symptoms point to the MAF; the other codes would make the car run poorly but probably not make it stall or lose significant power. Let me know if you want to attempt troubleshooting the MAF, or you could just throw parts at it...

P0102 = MAF sensor signal
P0138 = Rear HO2S signal
P0141 = Rear HO2S PRR No. 2 (?)
P1418 = EGR Temp sensor signal

I believe you have a turbocharged motor, in which case you have two O2 sensors; front & rear. I would replace the rear O2 sensor with genuine OEM (direct-fit Bosch; stay away from universal, splice type).

Try cleaning MAF sensor, including its electrical connection with contact cleaner. If that doesn't do, I would replace it with OEM MAF.

Other stuffs that can cause stalling:

- Fuel pump/pump relay
- Fuel system relay (on top of radiator)
- Cam Position Sensor (this one usually prevents the motor from starting)
- ECT sensor
- etc...

Anyone else has better suggestions?

Thanks JPN,
I want to get it repaired even though it did not stall ever since. I would appreciate any info you can give me.

Thanks,
Riculus
