850 starter crunch

Any ideas? When I turn over my 96 n/a it may start right up or it turns over and it sounds like the starter locks or like its jamming in the flywheel. Should I just remove the starter and see? Thanks

Pull the starter and inspect all the teeth on the flywheel/flexplate and if you don't find anything, take the starter to an auto parts store to test it and see if it malfunctions on their test bench.
