You could always check by verifying the VIN #. Also, if you look under the hood and there is a turbo, then it's legit. If there is no turbo under the hood....not so much.

In 1994, the 850 only came in two levels, base 850 (N/A 2.4L 5-cyl 168hp) or Turbo (2.3L 5-cyl turbo 222hp).

Here is the Wiki article on the trim levels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_850#Trims_.28U.S..29

You can cross check the VIN with Carfax too.

You can verify on the Volvo site: http://www.volvocars.com/us/top/comm...yourvolvo.aspx

Or just check your vin here on their site:
https://www.customers.volvocars.com/...C/vin1994.html

If the vin has a 57 in after the 6th position it's likely the 2.3 20 Valve T5 motor.

Another way to check -- if you see a working Turbo Gauge on the instrument panel -- then you got a Turbo car.

and the T5 was the designation given to the turbo 850. the non turbo are just the 850 or the 850 GLT
