850 Turbo interference engine or not?
Hi all. My bad, Ineglected to change my timing belt from 220k to 394k, now it broke. Are these engines interference type ebngines, that is, should i now be concerned about valve damage from this break down?? I was cruising at approx 70kph under light acceleration when it died. I have to decide on replacing the belt and hoping for the best or tearing off the head and expecting the worst...
TIA

Matt850, he is from outside the US. Those are Kilometers, not miles lol.
But Messenger, I don't know where you're from, and what the equivilant of 400kilometers is (I think about 200k miles, roughly), but do you have the budget to get a new car?
If you can't....These engines are pretty cheap. I've heard that in the US, they run for around $600. Most engines are around $1000....

400k is more like 240,000 miles. I just painted the darn thing a month ago, so I was hoping to get another year or 2 or another 200k out of it (courier business owner)
It was still runningreally strong, just bit of after idle turbo smoke but nothing major, and I've got a box full of new front end parts I was going to install this weekend. I was hoping they were not interference engines, but I guess its off to the wrecking yard in search of a head I go
I know of only 1 engine available in my entirearea (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)and it's out of a 97 V70 with approx 75,000 miles on it, they want 1800.00CAD +15% tax. Hopefully i can pickup a used head for a fraction of that, or worst case scenario, rebuild mine.

the car in question is my Turbo. After I was rear ended by a tercel and walked away with a pretzeled exhaust, dented tailgate, and a broken tail light, while the tercel was dragged onto the back of a tow truck for scrap, I bought a non-turbo for the wife (she gets enough tickets)

i know of at least 4 non turbo engines locally, I've been keeping an eye out at the local yards as i also bought a 94 non turbo for one of my drivers and given his propensity for neglecting his vehicles (guy with a broken belt pot/kettle/black eh) thought it wise to watch for a spare engine.
