Default 850T air box mod (my writeup)

Since I have seen this asked here a few times with no real solution, I thought I would post my idea of how to keep the stock airbox while using a conical filter.

Essentially what I did, since the cone air filter will not allow me to put the top of the air box back on was this: I took the top portion of the airbox off and used a reciprocating saw (use a metal blade for a smoother cut and run the saw on a lower speed) to notch out the box along the existing line thats in the top portion of the box. Then I used a dremel tool with a sanding disk to smooth everything out.

I did this because it retains (reasonably) stock appearance and allows me to keep the hose that runs to the front of the car in place to get cool air to the filter. Also, to allow a little bit more air in, i used my saw and dremel tool to open up and smooth out the area on the front of the hose at the front bumper.

Total time for me to do this job was probably not more than 20 minutes, and I'm really happy with the outcome - I hated the idea of just having a cone mounted to the end of the intake with it just laying there in the engine compartment. And this way i have pretty much all the benefits of having the air box with somewhat improved airflow. I guess if i really wanted to invest some time, i could find a way to attach something to the area that I cut out in orfer to seal it off from the engine compartment, but since i also modified the frontal area where the intake hose fits to the front bumper, I think im getting more cool air in anyway.

Yikes!!! I thought the purpose of the cone intake filter was to allow gross amounts of air to the air intake. I would prefer to use a kit from FCP or ipd. Then I could alway go back to the stock system if I got rid of the car. Also, they sell a really good box filter from K & N. That is what I am running on my 850.

the stock airbox will still let plenty of air flow into the intake through the cone filter. As for being able to tut it back to stock - I have an extra air box top that I got from the junk yard for 2 bucks.

I prefer to get solutions that are not grossly overpriced. If i can make something on my own that costs me 10 bucks that would cost me $200 or whatever outrageous price they charge, I'm gonna invest the time and do it myself EVERY time. With the IPD box, you run into the same issue with air flow that you would by using the stock airbox. You still have a sealed off area of the engine compartment with a cone filter in it that is fed fresh air by a single hose.

Sweet. That sounds great. Especially if you have a spare lid.
