Default 93 850 GLT stumbles on accel

The engine seems to burble a bit on accel........most noticeably in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range. After 4000, it smooths right out. the car is relatively new to me, and I'm stuck in a small town for a few days and can't even get a fuel filter. Has anyone run into this, and any suggestions foe a good starting point to rectify? standard transmission.
thanks in advance,
Dave

Any codes in the systems?
Is the check engine light on?

Hi Tech,
No check lite, haven't checked for codes. Will it still store codes without the check lite on?

Sometimes it will.
The computer usually sees it so many times before it will kick the light on.

Tech,
I found 2 codes in the ignition side........214 and 314........rpm sensor signal and camshaft position sensor signal...........Cleaned both electrical connectors (there was corrosion present on the pins) and thought I was home free. After driving approx 200 km. The burble was still apparent in the same range. checked for codes again and nada. Back to basics, I think and check spark plugs and wires.
Thanks for your help!!

I inspected spark plugs and found the Volvo brand installed. They are the 3 electrode style and seemed to be eroded quite a bit..........around .050" gap was the closest. I replaced them with an NGK single electrode gapped at .028". A quick test drive seemed to eliminate the burble, but will let you know if it's still an issue once I get a decent drive in.

Well, I still have the intermittent miss.........most apparent in a higher gear, still in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range. My next thought is catalytic convertor a little plugged up.
Any thoughts on this? There is no codes on the fuel or ignition.

Not sure of the age of cap, rotor and wires, but cap and rotor looked real good. I'll check the wires using an inductive timing light.
What do you think of the catalytic converter idea?

That would be the last place I would look.

If the wires aren't the Factory style most of the aftermarket wires sets aren't that good.

I believe they are factory wires, but no idea of age...........I'll see how they look with the timing light hooked up to each lead.

You could also look closely on the wires. You will see either in Yellow or white Numbers stamped on them.

That is the Date they were made.

I'm having the same problem.. sort of on my 95 850 2.5

Interestingly enough my local Volvo dealer hass prooved incapable of finding the problem and so far has created a large expense for me.

Initially I struggle to get smooth response at low revs, around 1500 rpm with a jumpy feeling.
I mentioned it before putting it into a service, it passed MOT, service £220 (never again)

The volvo garage got me to replace a hose from filter to engine. Did nothing. £20
Then they replaced the distributer, and claimed it was fine after doing this. Did Nothing. £70
Then they replaced my exhaust manifold.. it did have a crack in it, so I realise it was important. It helped a bit, but the problem remains. £580
They now claim its the HT leads, I've got some bosch ones on order and will replace them myself. £30
Next I intend to try sparks which will give a nice running total so far of £620

You can see why I have decided to find the problem myself, partly due to cost, and partly due to the incompetence of my local dealer. I am reminded that these issues can be difficult to fix, whilst I can accept that, its the fact that the car has been returned to me not working after volvo have had it on and of for over 2 months. The hell I went through to get the exhaust manifold replaced.. needless to say Volvo have not been paid as of yet.

My problem has been put on the back burner for a while...........too damn busy. i've had funny symptoms with plug leads before and that is where I'll look next. Let us know how you make out.

I changed the spark leads, and the problem has become more pronounced now. Not sure, probably have to do the sparks next, but I have had suggestions its a fuel issue grrr.

Usually not the idle valve.
Does the Cam sensor plug look good?
Is the Rear cam seals leaking oil?

Did you replace the Cap and rotor as well?

replaced the cap and rotor.. that was done at the dealers, not checked the cam sensor yet..

Someone suggested coolent temp sensor? due to the way it starts when the engine warms up.

checked the cam sensor and and around the cam, definitly no leaks all looks pretty good and tight..

I beginning to suspect 1 of 3 things..

1. Fuel Filter, looks a bit old, I know they reccomend you change them every 50,000.. it has been serviced every year by but I suspect the ability of my Volvo dealer to not be reliable. Car is at 100,000 just over

2. Possibly a temp sensor.. coolent temp sensor for example, maybe something else.. hoping to get my local dealer to read codes from my car for me.

3. Timing
