Dropped it into my dealer and asked to read the codes from the ECU for me, finally got one..
its the Idle Throttle Valve... apparently prone to failure on the 850, they recalled a load quite a few years back

Funny I have only ever seen one go bad in the 6 years I have worked on these cars.

Thanks for the link, does anyone have a part number? If you have a volvo 850 2.5 10 cylinder (b5252 engine) is it the same valve accross the 850 range?
