'94 850 (NA) Honest input pls.
I need some honest opinions and input. My knowledge is basically in domestic stuff so here I am. I'm looking at a 94 non turbo auto.with 150k (240k km) on the clock. Tell me the good bad and ugly on these cars. What are common issues? What kind of longevity do you typically see in the 2.4 and the rest of the drive train? how do the bodies hold up to many winters? where should I look for corrosion? What is realistic highway fuel mileage since it will be used 90% highway. I've seen the ad should I take a look or ignore? He wants $2500 Canadian.
Thanks people!

Hi Stills,
Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.
By now you might have decided to buy, or not to buy 850. Sorry for belated reply, I've been going through difficult times, by coming back to Japan after living in North America for so long. The top-dog of the forum, named Moderator Tech, is also unable to come to the forum at the moment.
Anyway, you might not be reading this, as no one has replied for about 2 weeks, so I'll make it beneficial for everyone. Meanwhile, someone please correct me if I'm inaccurate in some of the info.
GOOD:
1.Handling (unless suspension components need replacement)
2.Acceleration (especiallyfor turbo, it is exhilarating ator above4,000RPM)
3.Bodydesign (I don't know of any other Volvo that looks sharper than 850)
4.Safety (Volvos are noted for its safety, especially the rigid body)
POOR (UGLY):
1.Timing belt. It has to be replaced at every 70,000 miles (60,000 for '93)/5 years. If neglected, you're looking for a new head/engine.
2.ABS module (engine heat & made in Philippines render this useless. Also, many places do not repair/upgrade the module for Volvos that are older than 1995 model)
3.Front suspension components (especially the upper spring seats, but with the age & high mileage on 850s, the front suspension pretty much needs to be rebuilt. But once rebuilt, it should be good for approx. 10 years/100,000 miles/160,000kms)
4.Other electronic components. Check engine light is a common problem.
5.Automatic transmission. If the previous driver did not take good care, it may be ugly to repair/replace it.
CORROSION:
I used to drive '94 turbo, and did not find the smallest bit of rusty spot, even at places where paint has chipped off. Volvo seems to use top-quality steel, unlike American/Japanese manufacturers.
GAS MILEAGE/FUEL CONSUMPTION:
850s seem to get pretty much the same gas mileage as other cars of similar size & engine. With proper maintenance & tyre checks, it won't be too bad on your wallet.
I hope this is of some use. Other people can also provide input that I don't know of.
