Default 94 850 Tranny Problems

I have a 94 850 Turbo with about 160K. I have replaced the engine a while ago and recently the fuel pump relay. Now it has a serious transmission problem. When it goes to shift to 3rd it kicks out as if in neutral and there is no power from the Transmission so I slow down and it will down shift but repeats itself going to 3rdand now it seems I only have 1st and 2nd gears. The trouble code from the tranny is 322 which is saying incorrect gear ratio 2nd gear. Outside of the obvious that the tranny is shot, I am going to try to flush it and see what happens. Any other suggestions on a possible fix without replacement.

Thanks

Hi,

I once had "incorrect gear ratio" code on my 850 and it was triggered by low transmission fluid, as little as a half quart. After topping up the fluid, the code never returned.

Before flushing, determine the fluid level & condition. The fluid should be clear red and should not have any burnt smell to it. To check for correct fluid level, refer to the following thread:

https://volvoforums.com/m_48928/tm.htm

My 2nd post has an instruction. If low, top up with Dexron-III/Mercon. Do this and reset the code and if the problem keeps coming back, then the problem may be more complicated.

Best wishes,

JPN

Thanks, I hope that is it, I am afraid that since it is slipping through 3rd that I may have a bigger problem but heres hoping the flush works

I wish you luck. In case if the gearbox still acts up after flushing (be sure to use Dexron-III/Mercon; if wrong type of fluid is introduced into the system, it'll be catastrophic). If the 3rd gear still slips after flushing, the clutch plates on the 3rd gear may have burned/worn out (in general, an auto-gearbox has multiple clutch plates at each gear).

In the worst case scenario, try looking for a used/rebuilt unit. I would go for a used unit, as I do not have any info on how reputable rebuilt units are. Also, repairing the gearbox on Volvos is not recommended due to its complexity. Listen to other members too, regarding the choice between rebuilt & used units.

Good luck,

JPN
