Angry 94 850 Turbo Excessive smoke coming from tailpipe

First post so be gentle!

Some info on the car.

.94 850 Turbo with 180,000 miles
.Stock exhaust setup except for the muffler, I put on an 18inch Insynerator
.Just did oil change a week ago
(There is vapor coming from dipstick and I have read about cleaning the PCV system)

.Car was shutting off as soon as I put it in gear, so I swapped out the Mass Air Flow Sensor and voila that problem was gone!

.Airbox under hood is not intact..the bottom part is there with a cone filter installed while I try to find a decent top part from a turbo at the junkyard

Car runs fine from what I can tell

Had no problems before with excessive smoke coming from the tail pipe, Drove up to my local junkyard today (approx. 45 miles back and forth)..sometime on the way back the weld on the front of the catalytic converter broke and the car became terribly loud...)So. after i got home I parked the car and let it idle for awhile as i put on the headlight wiper arms/wipers i got from the junkyard, as well as some other small things. After about 15 mins of sitting there running, smoke began pouring out (I shouldn't say pouring but you know what i mean). shut the car off for awhile and upon restarting, the smoke was gone. Now today I had no smoke, so i went ahead and replaced the trip computer bulbs, a new Econ/sport switch, glove box hinges, and a new antenna mast as well....So all said and done I got in, started it up to leave and boom...smoke again, it smells like oil to me and i can't really tell whether it is blue smoke or white smoke with a bluish tint, but it definitely smells like oil.. When i get on the gas while sitting there alot of smoke comes out, but I noticed once I'm cruising for a little, I don't see any smoke, not even while at a stop light.

Any and I mean any help would be greatly appreciated! I love my car and I would love to be able to fix this myself. Thanks in advance guys/gals!

I think ur turbo might be going bad or a broken headgasket. I do know that when blue smoke appears, is the turbo going bad.

Sounds to me like you have an internal oil leak in the turbo....I would rebuild turbo I think the mitsubishi rebuild kit is like 120...don't get the cheap eBay one there Junk....I would also do the pvc maintenance and clean all your charge pipes....seafoam treatment would be a good start also but it sounds like once the car is warmed up (turbo) it starts smoking so I'm leaning towards turbo leak..

It could possibly be your turbo, but my money says it's your Valve stem seals.
I also went through this with my '97 850R at right about 185k miles last summer.

Also if it's the seals in your turbo are bad, it'll blow plenty of smoke while you're under load.

The only really positive way that I know to diagnose whether it is the turbo, or the valve stem seals, is to pull the turbo (which is not difficult and will be necessary either way) and see if the oil in on the inlet and outlet (internal engine/valve stem seals leaking), or just the outlet (turbo).

I got my turbo rebuilt and balanced by Evergreen Turbo in Ocala Florida. $390 shipped and he had to fix two of the studs. WELL WORTH IT to have it done right.

If it is the valve stem seals, well I did the headgasket in my NA car a few years ago (and took the head to a machine shop). It is not particularly difficult but don't expect to have it back up and running within a weekend unless you are a pro. There is a reason that any shop charges an arm and a leg to pull a DOHC head - it is very time consuming.

update: Got out of work today and let the car warm up. It smoked for a little bit than stopped..So I let it idle for 20 mins and was on my way.. no smoke trail this time! however I can now smell it in the cabin and the CEL. came on so i checked the codes in A2 and received the 315 code.

Code 315 is Evap/purge system code.

Check your gas cap is tight, check all your vacuum hoses going to and from your purge canister. They are usually the cause of the 315 code.

Smoking at start up and dissipating is a sure sign of valve stem seals..
Its a nice size job but its worth it to do. i did mine about 15k ago and im still running strong at 438,000 miles.

As far as the turbo goes, if you have the patience to rebuild it yourself, it will only cost you about $100 to $150 total.

I have a write up on here some place on how to do it. there is no need to take the exhaust off....
**Edit*** found the post
https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...rite-up-55357/

I order my rebuild kits from Mitsubishi direct but my advise go with carl from authentic-boosting. he sells the genuine kit and the aftermarket kit. here is his listing for the genuine Mitsubishi 15G kits--->Turbo Repair Kit GENUINE Mitsubishi TD04 9B 11G 13G 15G | eBay

My advise, if you do decide to do the valve stem seals... pull the head, do not do it with the head on... If you pull the head you can lap the valves and clean the top of the pistons.

ok so no smoke today after start up or after its warmed up, and no burning oil smell...but now I was driving down the road and the Turbo kicked in, then after letting off the accelerator I heard a sound (best way to describe it is "whewwhewwhew"- forgive the atrocious sound effects lol ...but I've never heard that before.. I assumed its the Turbo letting out excess pressure but I would have heard this before...is it a sign of the Turbo being bad?....and thanks for all the info guys, I appreciate it! The junkyard I go to has a few 850s with the turbos still in place so I'm weighing slapping another one on (first swapping housing with a straight or angled flange so I can bolt on the obx exhaust system in the future).. or rebuilding mine.
