You can try cleaning it and see what happens.

Check all the hoses good espically if you have one on the end of the intake manifold behind the power steering pump.

OK...what i understand is both of your intake hoses that are collapseable are doint that. the hose from turbo to the intercooler is a metal hose and can't collapse. I am quite sure that something is restricting the air flow to the inlet. A clogged air filter being the primary suspect but it could be something restricting the intokae to the airfilter box. Try running the car with air box open (unclipped) and see if it runs fine.

Default Need some help, please!

After some research on this forum, I thought that I had a defective starter and so I replaced it with a rebuilt Bosch starter and also installed a brand new radiator.
I was so confident that it would just start up, but it didn't apparently to teach me a lesson. I've recorded the sound it made w/ ignition key on.

Could someone tell me what's wrong?
The starter seems to be just spinning (w/o turning the engine).
Do I have a bad starter? It is my daughter's car and I'd love to get this running asap!

And here is the sound I recorded in MP3 format:
http://home.comcast.net/~gokihwan/im...olvo-sound.mp3
You might have to copy this link and paste on your favorite web browser to hear, since this forum doesn't support mp3 or wav format.

Any advices would be greatly appreciated!

To me it sounded like it was engaged with the ring gear. However, if you feel that it isn't turning the engine the solenoid on the starter is not working to engage the pinion gear on the starter and the ring gear on the flywheel. Once a while a rebuilt electrical device does not seem to work. Wait for a couple of more replies before taking it out again, and I would start a new thread on this.

The starter sounds fine to me, except it sounds like the engine has low compression (or did you have the spark plugs out?).

Are you saying the engine is not turning over? At all (i.e. the pulleys and belts are not moving while you crank the starter)?

I haven't touched spark plugs and I haven't checked the pulleys + belts, but I will check later this afternoon. However, I still do not hear the sound of the engine turning.

I took the starter to my local autopart store for bench test...and I saw it spinning, but I'm not sure if I have issues with the starter bendix's internal components, not fully functional.

Perhaps, buying a rebuilt Bosch starter for my Volvo wasn't such a good idea after all. If someone confirms that it really is the starter, I will look into getting another one. FCPgroton carries rebuilt Bosch starters and new aftermarket starters for 850 turbo, so I should stay away from it and get the brand new OEM part? What would you recommend buying? I think that a brand new OEM starter was around $350...Ouch...

Thanks for your help!

Default volvo 850 no start

hi again..

Ok...i had this same problem when i staretd this forum subject...

if teh starter spins but dioes NOT engage...after you have put in a new starter that is confirmed to work,,,then verify that your INJECTOR RELAY
is functional too....I fooud out quite by accident that this is what happens when I changed my starter and FORGOT to plug back in that relay...which is located on the right hand top side of the radiator.....once I plugged it back in
...whammo..the car started.

you cnt test to see if it MIGHT be ok...by turning the key and getting someone to put their fingers on the relay to feel for a clicking sound and a vibration.

let me know if this helps.....

Wooper,

I had my rebuilt Bosch starter bench-tested and I was advised that it was good.

If I hear engine turning and if the car doesn't start, then I say it might be the injection relay (not pumping the gas?). But, at this point, I'd like experts on this forum to confirm if my starter is turning the engine for sure by listening to this sound clip:

http://home.comcast.net/~gokihwan/im...olvo-sound.mp3

Do you hear the engine turning? I surely don't!

Thanks million!

JPN,
Your troubleshooting checklist is hard to read.
Any possibility to blow it up and repost, or email me the attachments to gokihwan@gmail.com?

Thanks!

Default volov 850 no start

hi again....

ok..did you verify IF the INJECTOR RELAY was actually totally functional..

I was surprised to see that as soon as I plugged back in that relay...that the STARTER turned over correctly......but there somehow seems to be a connection between that relay and FULL POWER to the starter...and since I took no chances at all now...I swapped it out for a new one....even tho it SEEMED to be functional and now my 15 your old baby with 338,400 is running like a charm..

Wooper999,
How do I check if the injector relay is fully functional? Does anyone know?
Where did you purchase your injector relay and for how much?
At this point, I'm willing to try whatever worked for you.

Thanks!

Default starting 850

hi again

ok its quite easy to test...

while you try to start the car,,,
with the hood open...
have someone put their fingers
ON THE RELAY...and feel for a CLICKING sound that should cause the
RELAY to vibrate a bit...enough to feel....IF they can FEEL the vibration
MOST LIKELY the RELAY is ok...if not...it should be changed for sure.

its a GRAY colored relay...
I got this one,,,AIRTEX Part # 1R1902
or something similar for about $35
and so far..teh car is working great again...after almost 3 weeks of hellish searching for the problems.

hope this helps.

Default Thanks everyone!

Just verified that starter was turning the engine, so it wasn't the starter!

Before I get my hands dirty once again, I'd just like to say THANKS to all of you (JPN, gdog and wooper999) for the advices and for being patient with me. I feel that I'm gonna be able to start up the volvo real soon.

By the way, wooper999!
What kind of scanner do you have and where can I get one for how much?
Can this scanner be used for any vehicles? I've got a few more to do list with my Volvo once it gets started, but overall I have been very satisfied with its performance and I'm planning to keep it for a long time.

I'm just amazed about your Volvo with almost 340K miles (or is it Km?) that still runs strong... You must take a very good care of your volvo! Keep up your good work!
