'95 850-abs idiot light-car wont start
We have a 95 850 sedan. From time to time, after starting the car, the ABS light comes on and the car will not shift into gear, then, if we jiggle the key, the light will go off and the car will then go into gear. Does the ABS need to be reset? Any suggestions or ideas. Thanks

Hello Lanny,
I distantly remember that a faulty ignition switch could cause this problem on '95 or earlier 850s. Generally, not being able to shift is due to a faulty PNP switch or a micro switch, but in your case it may be the ignition switch, considering the correlation with ABS warning turning on & problem disappearing when you wiggle the ignition switch.
Getting codes & reseting the ABS module is definitely a plus, and since your 850 is '95, you can reset it by yourself without any testers/tools. However, I assume the problem would persist even after resetting the ABS module, so I would look into the ignition switch. My ignition switch used to come out of its nest and there were no screws or other fasteners for it.
I believe someone in this forum may have had a similar problem so wait till they reply if you can. If it turns out that the ignition switch is at fault, you can get a new OEM switch at FCP Groton for $51 + shipping.

I hope this gives you some hints as to the problem.
