Default '95 850 fuel pump

i have just purchased a 2.4l 1995 volvo 850 and within a week the fuel pump has broken (car wont start due to no gas to the starter, new battery, full tank of gas, electrical has been traced to a problem there as well as the old 'bang-the-fuel-tank-with-a-mallet-when-starting' to jostle the pump).

what kind of work is involved to replace it? does it require removal of the entire gas tank? do i need to replace the entire fuel pump assembly?

i have had 2 quotes from 2 different sources. one says 1.5 hours, one says 4 hours. hmmmmm...

anything would be a big help. thanks.

It isn't that bad of a job. It comes out from the top through an access cover that is located just behind the passenger's side rear seat. Replacing the entire assembly is very expensive - around $400.00. You can get a rebuild kit from FCP Groton for under $100.00.

i followed the wonderful instructions found here to replace it (the entire assembly, not just the pump). after the procedure (which i think went quite well, actually) i tried to start the car with no success. is there anything i might be missing? a special way to re-prime the system? (i pulled the fuse to relieve the fuel pressure, but have since replaced it.) actually, even with the key in the ignition powering the car i cannot hear any noise coming from the pump. does this mean the one i bought doesnt work?

thanks guys!

Check for power to the pump wires when you turn the key on.

i believe there is still power going to the system because the car was running right up until i switched the pump assemblies. i drove the car into my driveway and removed the pump fuse to relieve the fuel pressure. up until that point the old pump was running (i needed to start it by banging the gas tank with a mallet while starting) so shouldnt that mean that there was power to the pump wires?

Yes that should mean it but I would check it anyways so you know 100%. If you have power there and no pressure you know the new one is bad.
