Hi all, just joining this great forum. My car is a 95 850 Turbo, standard no mods with a 134000 miles. An issue I'm having is that when I try to engage the AC I can hear the relay switch Kick on and the compressor will engage for about 3 seconds then it will switch off. 4 seconds later same cycle and will repeat until I switch off the AC. My question is, is this a compressor issue or is it just out of freon? To note is the compressor does make a rather loud whirling noise, audible and sort of unpleasant from the cabin. Any help on this would be appreciated.

How long have you had your Volvo?

 

I have had it for six months but the guy before me took extremely good care of it. I think the evaporator commonly leaks freon on these cars however and to my knowledge it is the original evaporator.

 

Depending on the weather, it can be normal for any car to do that. You could put gauges on it, and if the pressures match up to what is in the shop manual, then it is fine.

If it cools well, I would ignore it.. It's kind of difficult to gauge freon charge by fundamentals. They don't seem to have a high pressure test port. At least mine don't.
