96 850 fuel rail
Help! After gassing up, in short distance check engine lite came on and motor died down and stopped. Changed fuel filter. No help. Manual says fuel rail pressure shoud be 4.9psi +-. Got it started and checked pressurewhile engine running. Way up:28-30 psi. Again, in short time engine dyed down and quit. Engine dead fuel pressue:0 ). Question: I am checking pressure at tire type valve at end of rail w/ engine running. Is this correct way to check fuel pressure at rail. 2. Could fuel pressure regulator be the problem for dyind down of engine. At times I can rev the engine back up by pumping accelerator rapidly to once it reasches 3,000RPM then will run perfect for a while but will eventually chug down and quit.

Sounds more like your fuel pump is dying to me...
You didn't say if this was a turbo or not...?
4.9 psi??!! Think you read that wrong; think it's around 43 psi at idle w/NA.
You need to verify the pump is running first. You can bypass the fuel pump relay (to isolate that as the issue) and see if you get pressure. With the pump running and still no pressure, try slowly pinching the fuel return line; if pressure comes up, then problem is fuel pressure regulator.
My money would be on fuel pump or fuel pump relay; do search for repairing bad solder joints on fuel pump relay...

hELP AGAIN PLEASE: 96 850 non turbo. ;Checked fuel rail pressure. My manual said 4.9 psi normal. Believe now they meant to say kg/cm^2. Pressuer reads 37+psi @ 2000 rpm. Runs OK for short period, then died. when dying pressure started going up. My generic code reader: P0102 Mass Air Flow. HELP. Could this be a damper malfunction? Can't keep car running low enough to get to nearest Volvo shop.

Yes, should be around 43 psi.
FUEL PUMP PERFORMANCE TABLE (1)
Application Pressure Volume In 30 Sec.
psi (kg/cm ) Pts. (L)
850 ............. 43.5 (3.06) ................ 1.1 (.52)
(1) - At 12 volts, 68 F (20 C), with engine off and fuel
pump relay by-passed.
What would a "damper malfunction" be ?? Fuel pressure regulator ??
If you have a MAF sensor code and a check engine light with an engine that isn't running right you should test the MAF and replace if needed.
What did you end up doing on this one ??
