96 850 glt ecc temp control problem
My REC and AUT lights bink about 20 times when I start the car. I noticed that in order to get heat, I need to have the temp dial on the highest (hot) setting. if I move it any notches off the highest setting, the air gets cold. It's like there is "hot"and "cold" but no inbetweens. Anybody had this problem?
Ethanwagner, did you get the codes read and what did you find out was your problem?
The big benefit of asking a question is you getting help but also having a solution posted to help others who are searching for help with their problems.

my ecc rec and aut lights blink as well but I do not have any heat or air the blower does not work, I was thinking that I could replace the ecc and fix the problem that has not worked. I have a repair manual and looked in it to see if the blinking light was a code of its own I have not found any information on it.... I do not have a code reader nor do I know anyone with one that I dont have to pay for the use of it..... Any help would be nice... I would just like to not have foggy windows in the morning or when it rains.....
I just counted the blinks on my ecc it is 18, 19, 18 does this mean anything to anyone or is it just some blinking lights and I need to check the codes.. I did just see that autozone has a code reader I can use for free but dont know if it will something like this or not....
Try the AutoZone reader to see if it will give you codes... Do you have a CEL? I think the reader will only read CEL codes. Also, does the fan blow at all? If not it may be possible that the fan is the problem.
AutoZone and OReillys both loan out scanners. OReilly in this area has one that reads ABS also but I'm not sure if either work on the ECC system. They are engine management readers mostly for the "check engine light". If you're lucky you might have a self diagnostic center under the hood close to the neck of the windshield washer bottle. My 95 has one but I've read that 96 and newer would need a scanner.
When there is a fault with any of the components the two yellow lights on the face of the ECC unit for AC and recirculation will blink 20 times each time the vehicle is started. That just lets you know you have a problem somewhere in the system. To find out what it is you'd need to pull codes from the system.
If you have the self diagnostic connector and can pull the codes this link had the library to decode the blinks.
