Was wondering if this is a sign of the tranny going out? When you stick it in reverse, the car makes a thump. Only into reverse. Im thinking of buying the car but didnt know if this would be a problem. Guy says its always done it since he had it. car has 160k miles. What do you think

 

I'd suspect the transmission mount or one of the other motor mounts first. If you havent replaced the top mount or the transmission mount, I'd start there. I had a similar issue and replaced the transmission mount busing with the IPD polyurethane one and have had no issues since then.

For the transmission mount, I went with the blue bushing, and just pressed the old one out and put the new one in. If you feel the need to replace the whole thing, it should take you less than half an hour to swap it out for the whole assembly.

 

thanks for the information. the car has 162k miles and he says it runs great. already has boost gauge, 15 lbs, downpipe, exhaust on it.
