Default AC Problems. Level of difficulty?

I have a 1995 850 wagon, non turbo that I inhereted and enjoy driving it. It was my brothers who passed away. It has 178k miles and the overall condition is good.
The AC stopped working and the tech said there is a leak but it is difficult to find and will be very expensive to fix even if he finds it.
My question is, I have several junk yards close to me that have similiar volvo's that I can grab parts from.
Is the AC unit difficult to replace? If not, how do I check it before installing it?
My finances are limited and the only way my wife will come with me in the warm weather is if the AC works.
If there is someone who has experience in this dept. I would appreciate your input.
You may email me if you wish at stevesnyder60@yahoo.com
Thanks, Steve

To find the leak, the a/c needs to be recharged to its proper level and have a dye added to the system to find the leak. A/c work is really not DIY, unless you are well versed and have proper equipment. Used a/c parts are not recommended. A shop will probably charge $60-$100 to find the leak. A good set of gauges will cost you that much.

It's also helpful if the shop has an electronic "sniffer" that makes leak detection even more accurate.

Once you find the leak(s), people can start to suggest replacement parts and cost saving measures.
