Advice buying '97 850R
Hello everyone, I was looking for a car, specially for a Volvo, and I found an 850R. I have right now an 850 turbo wagon, and it still runs good, although it has about 250xxx miles. So I went this morning to take a look at the car at the dealership, but it was closed. I took some pictures anyways and it looks in good shape to me and I didnt find any leaks or stains under the car. But I found that the front bumper is cracked and that the paint in some parts is not so good. The car has 152036 miles and the dealer is asking $2500. I also noticed that it has yellow struts (front and rear), I guess those are performance ones. So I took some pictures of the car and I would like to know if it is expensive to get a new front bumper or to fix it, if it is possible. And also if it is cheap to have the traunk door and the spoiler painted.
Do you guys think it is a good deal?
Thanks,
Paco

Looks pretty ragged out to me, but the price isn't bad if you don't mind putting another couple thousand into it. Personally I would think your could get a much nicer car for around $4,000, and this one would end up costing you more than that in my opinion.
Thanks... the bad thing is that I dont count with more money. My budget is pretty low right now and I need a car to go to school and work, So I was trying to get a good car for around 2500 dollars. Once I start working I might be able to put some money on that car, but not by now. I am not sure yet if I am buying it or not.
I would pass on that unless you really want an "R" badly. There are a few clean versions left out there. You just have to keep your eye out. That car is worth maybe $1,500 in that condition.
Getting a co-signer would be a good idea, but me and my mon are still new residents in the US and we dont have any credit record. I want a volvlo 850 cause I have learned how to fi them and I think they are reliable cars and very comfortable. I dont more than that money and I was just thinkin if I could get something better than that for that money. Me and my mom are sharing the same car by now, so I need a car fast in order to get a job soon.
BTW, I talked to the dealer and he told me the car needs a new O2 sensor and new struts, so now I really dont think I am gonna buy it. I am just gonna have to keep looking for a nice cheap car by now.
Thanks everyone for your responses!

Nice cheap car does not = reliable car. Be very careful with dealers that sell these types of used cars. I think you are much better finding a private individual selling their own car. You get a better deal and they are USUALLY honest about the car. Never trust a used car lot. Try AutoTrader.com, cars.com and Craigslist and you should find something. New car dealers in general are fine, but you will not find a decent car for less than $5,000 from them.

I like craigslist the best (though you'll have to filter out the idiots, jerks, etc.). Best if you can deal with an actual private seller (not someone who buys/sells wholesale vehicles as a side-line..).
Another tip is to find the local Indy volvo shops in your area and go ck them out; talk to the manager and tell them what you're looking for. They might know of a customer that's getting ready to trade their vehicle in. These shops often have bulletin boards where they allow customers to post their vehicles for sale. Good way to find a clean used car for a good deal...
Good luck!
