Buying 1996 Volve 850R wagon, a few questions
Hey guys I am new to the forum but not new to Volvos as I own two 780 Turbos. Anyhow I am buing a 1996 850R Estate, the engine has been fully rebuilt which is a huge plus. It was smoking and losing oil so the owner did a total rebuild. Anyhow the only unresolved issues seem to be the speedometer and odometer are not currently working. He said the speedo works off and on even after he replaced it with a new one from a junk yard and the OD still will not work even after being replaced. Also the ABS and SRS lights are on. He told me that the ABS module needs replacing and I also read that the speedo is controled by the ABS so is this most likely the problem? As for the OD if its not the gears in the panel what else could it be? I am sure this issue has been covered but I could not find anything on the OD problem other than the gears which is most likely not the problem. Thanks, David G.

MattyXXL is correct. Odometer gear is a $ 12 mechanical part. It has nothing to do with the ABS system or the Speedo. You need to pull the instrument cluster though.
Fixing the ABS module will usually fix the speedo problem (Speedo is part of the ABS circuit). If you can solder, cost of fixing the ABS/TRACS/speedo is about $ 4. It involves removing the ABS module (north of Brake booster), opening it like a sardine can, and soldering a bunch of suspect joints.
