Another 850 that won't start
Seems like there are a lot of these posts on here lately...are the 850's all dying at once?
I have a '94 850 non-turbo with around 95k on the used engine.
For about a month, it's been having this issue starting intermittently. I would put the key in and turn it and just hear this whirring sound. I would pull the key all the way out, go to start it and it would start.
A week ago I went to start it and it started fine but when I went to back out of the garage, the engine was kind of chugging so I turned it off and went to turn it back on and it wouldn't start.
I had to be gone for a week so it sat.
Now that I have time to work on in, I have been able to get it to start, but not consistently.
I'll try a bunch of times to start it, get the clicks of the relays and the whirring sound. I've been able to figure out a way to get it started by turning the ignition to the last point before actually starting the car (when all the guages and relays click) and then I start it. SOmetimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't so I don't know if this was the magic trick or not.
TOnight I pulled the starter out which is a big pain in the butt because of my giant sasqwatch hands and took it to get tested and it tested out fine. Flywheel came out great. So now what?
My battery is rated at 750 CCA and came in at 550 when I had them test it quick at the shop last night. I'm taking it right now to do a full test on it. My thought is that the battery isn't always delivering enough juice to kick the flywheel on the starter out all the way to engage whatever starts my car. I have a new starter on order just in case but I don't want to put stuff back together until I have some other opinions on this issue. ANy ideas from the brain trust?

RE: Another 850 that won't start
If the starter does not crank:
- Retiring PNP switch.
- Retiring electrical portion of the ignition switch.
- Malfunctioning alarm/immobiliser.
- etc...
If the starter cranks but the engine does not catch:
- Retiring fuel pump.
- Retiring fuel pump relay.
- Retiring fuel system main relay/wiring.
- Faulty MAF sensor (more so for rough idle).
- Retiring CPS (Cam Position Sensor).
- Retiring ECT sensor.
- Retiring etc...
- Neglect/in need of tune-up.
- See attached.
- Wait for others replies.

RE: Another 850 that won't start
Thanks for the ideas. ANd I found out that my battery is also fine (had to check it just in case).
If one of those items you listed were failing, would that cause my car to not start at all? It starts every now and then and other times it won't. That's what makes me think it could be a faulty relay...but there is no way to test a relay is there?
What steps do I go through to determine what the problem would be assuming my starter cranks but engine does not catch?
