Hey all,

Back again and I forgot to mention that I'm running a power inverter in the car to power my laptop, love the big screen for Navi, and was wondering if anyone else out there uses one for anything.

The reason that I ask is that I'm beginning to think that this may be what's causing The Anvil to drop dead at times.

I was at the shop, as I mentioned earlier, and speaking with Jay (tech) ad he mentioned that he had to upgrade his alternator, he has a big *** truck that he uses for mudding, and he mentioned that when he runs his accessories, heater, lights or his winch that he'll notice a drop in battery power. He's running a 350 all bored out and yada yada yada.

My question is, is there a larger alternator for our Volvo's? I'm not sure what the power rating is for mine and I don't have a volt meter in the dash, wish I did, to keep an eye on things.

Some newer cars come with an inverter built in and I'm wondering if, when in use, they would cause a loss in power or a stalling issue? Anyone know of someone with a newer car that actually uses the plug in? I'm also wondering if running a second battery might help?

Has anyone out there added a volt meter and how hard would it be to do?

Any thoughts? Looking forward to hearing them.

Later.

When removing the PNP is it necessary to have the car in neutral, wheels chocked of course, or is it ok in park?

Hi,
runnning a invertor during the engine running shouldnt take any kill on the battery because the load/current drawn is nominal as compared to the capacity of alternators in cars (vovlo has 70 - 100Amp). If you are using this during the car is parked with engine turned off, then that might definalty drain the battery.

yep, if it is a simple and small one or two outlet inverter, I wouldnt worry about it unless you are draining the battery by using it while the car is OFF.

Hey all,

Thanks for the quick replies. That's one of the many reasons that I appreciate this forum.

Just to be sure that everyone understands I wasn't disagreeing with anyone and to probably prove everyone right heres what just happened.

I left Mom's place in Arnprior just after 1700hrs and was heading back to Renfrew. I came up to hwy 17, waited for traffic to pass and stepped on the gas, turned left on to the hwy and didn't even get 200 yds when I could feel the signs of the car wanting to stall. Of course I stepped down on the gas but The Anvil had it in it's mind that the trip was over, wouldn't pick up speed still felt the stall coming, so I pulled off the hwy and as soo as I took my foot off the gas the engine died.

I sat for a couple of minutes, literally, turned the key and the engine fired right up.

RAMALAMADINGDONGRUDDYPOOCANDYASSS :-(

Hit the hwy again and made it all the way to Gillan Rd. but had to stop at the lights. That was fine, and the engine kept running. Thought, for sure, that it was going to stall but glad it didn't.

Turned left onto Gillan Rd. and made it about 2km when I could feel it wanting to die again, pulled over, I knew that it was over - AGAIN - and it died, AGAIN.

Waited three minutes, if that, turned the key and the engine fired right up again.

Down Gillan Rd., left on to Barnnet Rd., right on to Eight St. and down and into the driveway where, as soon as I came to a stop, the engine died for the third time in less than twenty minutes.

Laptop was running on battery power so I know for sure that the inverter isn't the culprit and I got out of The Anvil cursing trucker style. See ramalama above :-).

SO, I'm going to pull the relay as per Tech suggestion and see what I can see. Hoping that I don't some how mess it up.

Thanks to all of you that chimed in. Wish me luck.

Later.

well for sure it is fuel related.i would find a used relay at a junkyard and see if it works.if it does then you might want to buy a brand new one or try and fix it like tech said.good luck.

Hello to everyone once again.

Well, with all of the posts that I have made and replied to as well as all of the question's asked and answered, it's time I update this and let everyone know where I'm at. And thank you all again.

It started with the SAFETY almost three years ago at $1k for all four tail lights and the front passenger head light.>:-[ Then there was the replacement of the rad, rad fan, coolant cap, left drive shaft, power steering lines, power steering rack, sway bar links, cracked steering knuckle and this was one of those BONEHEADED moves where a curb and I disagreed, starter, coil, wires, plugs, fan relay, temp sensor, thermostat, A/C compressor, struts, shocks and everything to do with the suspension hardware front and rear, front calipers, rotors front and rear, parking brake(complete), engine and transmission, fuel pump, fuel pump relay and the dreaded PNP switch.

It took almost a year for both to fail to the point where I was absolutely sure that they were the parts needed because I've thrown parts at cars before and not gotten the job done. No nickel and dime this time. It's what's needed when needed. No more. No less.

The last three are what where causing my no/hard starting (PNP) and my stalling (fuel pump) out at any old time in the most inconvienient, and last couple where way dangerous, places imaginable.

The engine and tranny seemed to be things that my friends would joke about as the only things that I hadn't replaced until I had to. I know what some of you may be saying, "What the funk, I woulda walked away long before that", well congrat's to you. Me, I'm not going to go so far and then walk away from all of the effort $$$$ that had gone before to give a car away after all the cash invested.

Anyway's, The Anvil is now doing as it's supposed to. Giving me a very good ride that's reliable, comfortable and fast.

Things on the "To Do" list are:

Heater core - tired of the coolant odour.

Stop Lamp Switch - would like the ABS and Tracs to work properly.

Cruise control - not sure what the problem is yet but I'll look at the switch at the brake pedal and check under they battery for the hose that is known to degrade.

A/C - I'm sure there's a leak somewhere but it can wait as long as the windows work.

Shifter console light - that thing is very small and I'm unable to find one but have dash lights and will replace them on the weekend.

Rear backing plate's - can't repair the parking brake as there is a clip on the backing plate that's used to hold a spring. Old car so they're rusted out.

Seat heater - I like warm buns in winter.

Moon roof - I'm not sure if you can get parts for this as a piece that allows the roof to slide back is broken. It still vents but will not slide into the roof.

That's all for now. If there is anyone out there that can help me locate the rear backing plate and a light of the shifter console and some roof help I'd be very thankful.

Looking forward to some replies and maybe a location or two for some of the parts I'm looking for. The backing plates are really what I'd like to find first but the bulb for the shifter console is a great start as well.

Thanks :-)

I bought bulbs from 'the source' formerly 'radioshack', 12V with pigtail wires and soldered them in existing holder and they have been working very nice since last year. Costs about $2 for 2 of them. I also found one elecronic parts store here where I could buy them for about 85 cents each. So, I bought 10 of them and have replaced all my illumination (switches, shifter console, cig. lighter and cluster LCD backlight)ones on my 94 turbo and it certainly feels nice to drive that at night.
As for ABS/tracks, I vaulanteer to repair module for free as long as you can take care of bringing it to me and take it (shipping).
Can you take picture(s) of the broken part on your moon roof? I can check for that in my next visit to wreckers and see if I can be of any help.

Talking

Hey there bestharry,

I've checked "the source" that's here in Renfrew and they don't have what I need so I may have to check in Ottawa the next time I'm there.

How do I go about figuring out the wattage of the bulbs? And how did you remove the bulbs from the heated seat switches? Light in the switch itself, right?

On a good note. I filled up The Anvil and the computer shows that I now have 700klm of travelling distance. The most I've ever seen after a fill up is 560klm so this could be interesting. And on my trip last evening I got 600klm with about 30klm left t go :-]

This is great because for the last while I've been getting just over 500klm city/highway and getting over six is a great thing if it really happens. Apparently a new pump can do wonders.

I'll take a pic or two of what I'm speaking of and post them.

Thanks.

Rich.

The calculation of the distance on tank is done by many factors in consideration. One of the main is the load factor which it calculates from the speed and throttle position which means that if you have poor performance (misfires or weak current or fuel trim issues) you will have to press the paddle harder to achive that speed resulting in more fuel consumption (less total distance).
The wattage on those bulbs is pretty standard and the only variant I could find was the voltage. i.e. 12V or 14V. I tried both and found that 14V ones just glow little dimmer and might have longer life. I think they are called T1 size bulbs.
For switches, its very easy to pull them apart and then solder new bulbs in place of old ones with just litttle soldering skills.
Again, I am in Toronto and if you are planning to travel towards this side then give me a little notice and i can help by buying those bulbs for you and even replace them for you.

Default Lights and Stuff.

Hey now bestharry,

I understand about load. I'm just saying that I've never seen the trip calculator have 700klm on it :-0. And if the milage truely goes up then I'm a happy man. It's already gone up about 25klm/trip extra and this makes the fuel pump price well worth it.

About taking a trip, down south as it were, doesn't scare me as much now that I'm coming up on a full week with no issues of starting or running or stalling and I'm feeling pretty good about owning a Brick again.

I appreciate the offer for the help and just may take you up on that. 1. Because I'd find it'd be cool to meet another Volvo fan that's keeping "Pride In Their Ride" & 2. I've been wanting to go for the ride for some time and an actual meet and greet would be nice. Besides, I'll have a chance to really put the Garmin laptop Navi to work and really check the milage long distance.

Speaking of fixing things, the heater core is definately next on the "To Do List" because I'm not liking the fog up on the cool mornings. Have you ever changed one? I've found a "how to" online from another site and I'm of the mind to try it as I'm looking to save some coin now that it's just the little ****ily things and it doesn't appear to be that hard to do. I've have my center console out and my set up is the same as in the shots of the repair pics.

The nice weather is here and I'd really enjoy a good road trip. I'm the type of person that'd take the road tour (showing age with that term) just because I've never been there before. Not T.O.. But where you are. And who doesn't like to travel to new and exotic places ;-]].

Thanks guy and back with more updates and repairs as I make them and I'll take those photo's of the sunroof. It's a small piece of the track (leading edge) from the passenger side and I can't find it anymore but I'll take a shot of where it's from. And I'll grab shot of the shifter bulb as well.

Later.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for a nice reply. I am in Scarborough area right off the 401 and will be excited to meet you (another volvo fan). Well, I just came back on friday last week from a 6 days road trip to down south touching South Carolina and looping via Ohio. This was a very nice trip to new EXOTIC places and I threw about 4000kms on my vehicle without any show stopper - just opened the hood every morning to find all lubes to the mark. I ended up getting little above 12kms/L (please calculate mileage from this to your units - about 8L/100Kms) which is not bad specially with all that hill drive in south and AC on for about 80% of the travel time.
All in all it raised my confidence level on this vehicle and I am all set to start another trip to Winnipeg starting this Saturday. My trip to Ottawa is still due :P - maybe next moth sometime.
No, I havent done the heater core replacement but I am assuming that it will not be a very tough job specially in this pleasant weather and with all the procedural support from great members here.

Well hey now Harry,

I'm up, from you, in Renfrew. Very small but you can still see the stars when your right downtown.

Sounds like the trip was a sweet one. And no drama from your Brick is a good thing. I'm looking forward to putting on some miles to see how good my car really is on the long haul.

Mine, like a women, it's caused me stress <:-(, made me happy :-), left me hanging |-o, almost got me killed >:-{ and caused me some serious public embarrassment %-\. And, of course as with any women, jewelry as in shiney new parts to make things better. Needy little bugger ;-]

Back at ya later with more.

Alrite Richard,I will definately keep that in mind and will make sure to give an opportunity to to be my host and I agree more then 100% with you on the similarities between a pamperred vehicle and women.

I think we should keep this thru mails and messages rather then going all over in this thread :P....So, see you there sometime soon.

Cool

Hey now Harry,

Not a problem.

I'm currently figuring the travel time between here and there and what sights I might see. About six hours fromwhat I can figure. I'll let you know when I have the time and we'll work it out. At least once before he summer is over. I think I'd be pretty cool to be honest with you.

It's time to get the Stop Lamp Switch to see if that will fix the Tracs and ABS lights that are on. It started with a rusted out sensor/tone ring on the drivers side axel that lost a piece and then just fell off. Replaced the axel but have had too many other problems to worry about it until now. I pulled the codes and got a 141 + 142. And since the it's less than fifty bucks, from the dealer at that, I'll head into Ottawa tomorrow and get one and check on the milage during the trip.

I'm setting up another Photobucket page to show off The Anvil, again, but currently have more shots of the old ride and will have to add more. Take a look if you remember the Acura Vigor GS circa 92 - 94. Man, I teally miss that car. It was fast, looked great and had hands free Pioneer AVIC-N1 Navi. With Camera>:-)

Vigor

And the Brick, of course. I'll have to get more but for now these two will have to do. Don't know what happened to the rest. Anyway, enjoy!

Hey all,

Here's a question that I hope someone can answer.

What size wrench is needed to remove the nut off of the Stop Lamp Switch located on the brake pedal above, what I think is, cruise control switch?

I've got a 141 and 142 and it looks like it should be easy to replace. A freakin tight squeeze but shouldn't be a problem.

Look forward to your help.

Update;

I got the stop lamp switch changed. 17mm wrench. And no change. still have the same codes.

I guess I'm going to have to keep looking.

I anyone has any ideas I be happy to hear what else might cause a 141 - 142 code besides the obvious. It's been a while since the ABS/Tracs has worked properly and I've gotten used to the standard braking.

Looking forward to your help.

Hello Quick Brick
I had this problem, check out https://volvoforums.com/forum/showth...highlight=arzy

The pedal sensor is located on the brake booster, a simple repair and no more codes or ABS/TRAC light

To all who have followed,

I have changed the PNP and Stop Lamp Switch and still have the ABS and Tracs light on.

Now, I notice that, the tracs light doesn't come on until I get over 20kph but the ABS light is on as soon as I start the car. It didn't used to be. It would only come on after I used the brake when backing out of the yard. I always park in the same position and in the same manner. I drive into my space, no relation, and reverse to then drive out again.

I'll pull some codes and post them to see what may be next.

Richard C.
