Axle shaft replacement
Hi folks,
While doing an oil change today I discovered that the drivers side outer CV boot has torn on the 1995 850 Turbo, and has slung most of the grease out. I'm assuming it is time to replace the left axle shaft.
I did a search but for some reason could not find a how-to on doing this repair. Can someone point me to a good write-up/how to, and is this something fairly straightforward and easy to do or should I take it to a shop. I've changed struts, control arms, etc before so I know my way around the car somewhat.
many thanks,
Glenn

lolwut?
Replacing axles is a cake walk.
PS:
Undo sway bar link at strut, undo ball joint, loosen control arm nuts at subframe, loosen strut mount bolts, remove axle nut, maneuver hub off of end of axle, remove axle bearing collar on back of block, pull out axle. done.
DS:
Undo sway bar link at strut, undo ball joint, loosen control arm nuts at subframe, loosen strut mount bolts, remove axle nut, maneuver hub off of end of axle, slide chisel between transmission case and axle, tap with hammer until axle pops out. Done.

My mechanic recently replaced my CV halfshafts, brake rotors, brake pads, and spark plugs with all-new replacements for a price of $500, which includes the price of all of the parts, the labor, and the tip, so pretty much everything. I'm happy.

When you do an axle you should also consider replacing the output seal at the transmission. It might not be leaking now but do you really want to go through all the trouble of pulling the shaft back out to replace it if it starts to leak in 10 or 20 thousand miles. They are under 10 bucks. Just a thought.

I think it would be crazy not to replace the seals. The chances of a 15 year old seal holding fluid after you tear a shaft out and force another one through it is slim. I replaced both seals when I did a set the other day.
BTW, that's an entirely different issue. It was tough getting those seals out and back in. Another reason to let someone else do that job.
