Default B-pillar repair

Hey everyone long time no post, been busy with work, the house, and well the list goes on. My car got hit last week and I'm dealing with insurance and body shop. I'm 99.9% sure they are going to total the car, but we'll see if I let them take her.

My question is about the B-pillar. How much damage can this sustain before needing to be replaced? Also what is the SIPS box?

Certain safety related components are manufactured in HSS with further increased yield points:
-SIPS box
-Side collision bars in the side doors
-SIPS-bar under the front seats.
-Rear seat backrest frame

These components may not be heated when aligning or welded with oxy-acetylene.

Note! These components crack easily when aligned and must be replaced and not repaired.

Condolences.

Had similar situation about 1 month ago for my 96 T5. There was sufficient impact that the SIPS deployed. This assured that the insurer wanted to total the car. However, I opted to "buy back" the car and have the door repaired. Once the door was removed, there was some damage to the B pillar, but not severe and could be repaired.

The key is the degree of damage to the pillar.
