Blinking tranny light
Hello all,
So I just bought a '95 850 sedan and the tranny light started blinking this afternoon. I was reading some of the posts and determined how to get the diagnostic codes. I got a code 122 which I think means "IAT sensor missing or faulty". Can anyone explain what this means? Thanks in advance.

There is a 99% chance you have a failing PNP switch. Row the shifter back and forth from low to park, quickly, 15 or 20 times and it might clearthe problem temporarily. They seem to fail more often in cold weather and after the car has been parked for a while when the grease gets stiff.

Thanks!! It has been cold here (Montreal, Canada) for the past couple of days and it only seems to happen when I first start driving. I rechecked the code on port A1 and got 313 which I think is faulty signal from PNP!!!
Is this something serious? I am not even sure what a PNP is!
Thanks again for the replies, this forum is fantastic.

The PNP switch tells the engine and transmission control module what gear the transmission is in.
When the PNP fails it will throw codes in both and either start in 3rd gear or will make the car not start at times.

PNP is a Park - Neutral Position switch. Actually it determines all of the shifter positions but will lock out the starter function if it is not in park or neutral. When they go bad there is no connection to tell the transmission what gear has been selected so it defaults to 3rd gear as a limp home mode.
It needs to be dealt with or it can damage the transmission permanently. It hates 3rd gear starts.

It screws to the top of the transmission. You will have to remove the air box and battery tray to get to it.
If you follow the shifter cable to the tranny it attaches to the shaft on the top. The PNP is on that shaft. You cannot miss it.

Its fairly simple and straightforward to replace it if you follow the instructions from one of the thread on this site or from tht link attached below:
