Angry Brooken heater core

Hi all,
Well earlier in the week I told you about the my colant light coming on while on the highway and I added some and then I got the smoke/dust that came out of the vent. Well, it was steem and it was coming from my heater core. I got in to go to work and the front was flooded with antifreeze. Took it to the shop and they said heater core is done.
Is it only available from the dealer or can I get it aftermarket.

Thanks forthe assist.

There are a couple of brands out there, BEHR and Nissens. I have not been able to find the core at any of the chain auto parts stores. The BEHR that I installed in my '94 was not as wide as the OEM and the efficiency is not as good as cold air blows around the edges of the core. That car has the MCC so I just crank the ***** up further and it will warm up. A place I have begun to use for OEM parts at aftermarket prices is Darrell Waltrip Volvo. I received a full compliment of timing belt components and a water pump from them today at Scan Tech prices. They are at (800) 689-0021, ask for Jamie or Don and tell them you are on the message boards.

The BEHR "kit" came with new O rings and clips, I'm not sure of the OEM product comes that way or not so that is a question worth asking. If they don't come with the O rings and clips I would order them. One of my retainer clips was broken and the O rings definitely needed to be changed.

I got mine from fcp; they claim it's OEM (think it was Behr) and it fit and worked perfectly; FWIW. That was 2 yrs ago and no problems.

If you're interested in doing it yourself, it's really not too difficult; here's a good write up

Hi All,
Thanks for the info. I went to a shop because my mechanic has a heavy work load and connot get to me until late next week, he wanted $900. He said he has to remove the dash and all that good stuff. Is this something I can do for my self. I'm not anyway close to being a mechanic, even though I changed my ingition coil and repaired my horn. Do I really need to remove the dash on the 95 GLT sedan.
Thanks for the info.

p.s. Is the an available mechanic in brooklyn this weekend. I need my ride for work monday.

Hi All,
I'm going to order it from FCP and i'll do it myself. One question though. I see they have o-rings for the firewall side and the core side. Do I need both or just for the core side. What tools do I need, tork screws and what.
Thanks for the assistance and I will update you guys on my progress once the core gets here.
Thanks guys
Riculus

I bought both and I was happy that I did. Once of the plastic clips on the engine side of the firewall was broken and the yellow replacements took a different sized spacer and O ring. Trying to change them out piecemeal didn't work but changing them out as a system worked just fine for me.

Assuming your core is the only thing that's leaking then you will only need the o-rings for the core side, but like Lee said, it's also a good idea to get the other ones too and have them on hand, just in case you do need them.

You will need std #2 phillips screw driver as well as generic set of torx screw drivers.

I would also suggest printing out the thread that i pointed you to earlier; enough pages to get all the pics; then take the hard copy out to your vehicle and study it as you're taking it apart. The pics will make a lot more sense once you compare it to what you're looking at on your car.

Good luck; let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys,
So I got the core today and decided to do it immediately. So I went in. It was real easy to do except for thescrews on the passanger side. Forgot to mention I'm 6'4", 250lbs and the space was not working in my favor. It was a tight fit in/out but it is up and running.

Glad to hear it! So aren't you glad you saved yourself $700 by doing it yourself?
