Default Burning Oil

My mom has a 97 850 non turbo, burns oil at a rapid rate, putting in about 2-3 qts per month. No apparent ,leaks no smells of burning oil.Bad rings? Car runs great, although the sevice light stays on .

First thing to do is check replace the vent system.
Rings and valve seals are pretty rare to go bad as well.

Under the intake manifold on the passenger side of the car like behind the alternator is the vent box. It screws to the front of the motor. One hose goes up to the top of the motor. There is another one that goes over to the induction hose just before the throttle.

The first thing I would do it remove the hose form the mass flow to the motor. There is a connection that goes into the hose just before the throttle body. Inside the connection is a white screen looking thing. check and see if it is clogged. Also check the small hose connection to it. Make sure nothing at all is clogged in the system. Thats where I would start. Here is a link to a quick diagram of a parts list but it will give you and idea of the setup.

Thanks Tech for the info, I'm a novice when it comes to working on my cars. I've had 3 really nice volvos in the past, just too stupid to put a few extra hundred bucks to fix. Keep comming back to them, now hopefully I'm smart enough to keep em'.

Did this work? I have a 2001 VOLVO S40 and my car runs perfect, no oil leaks but when I went to get an oil change in 3 months only 2 quarts came. I'm burning oil somewhere but can't figure out where. Any ideas?
