Default Camshaft oil seal

can anyone tell me which way the oil seal on the exhaust cam, behind the cam position sensor, goes in? Is it the typical back of the seal open cavity inward or outward. My manuals seem to contradict each other. The current seal is popping out and leaking like a sieve.

Look on the back of the seal you will see a little spring. That part goes in first. The outside of the seal should look kind of flat. The U shaped should go in.

Thanks for the info- that's the way I assumed it would go in. The Haynes manual says to put it in the other way. Do you know if a crankcase ventilation issue can force the cam seals out? I'm trying to figure out why the seal is almost 1/2 way out of the seat.
