I found a used upgraded IPD ecu that was for a plain turbo and I was wondering if I can put this in a 1996 850 R.

The resulting performance is the same and I believe the only difference between the turbo and the R is the ECU, so I thought a "flashed" ECU from a turbo would work.

Or, if someone has an upgraded ECU for an R that they want to sell, please let me know.

Yes you can also find out the specs of the IPD one.
The only other difference might be EGR or air pump.

 

Yeah that's what I heard from someone else selling an IPD ECU from a '95 R. What exactly is affected by not having EGR in a '96 850 R and do I have that right? A '96 doesn't have EGR, right.

You'll get a CEL.

 

Do all IPD ecu's set off a CEL or is that only because it's a '95 in a '96?

You have to see what you have. In 96 you could have an EGR or an Air pump or nothing.
I am running a 96 chipped ECU in mine for nothing and my car had EGR which this ECU deletes it. So no Cels for me.
