Default Car not going into 4th gear again

I have had this proble off & on for just under two years. It happened again last night. I notice it either happens when I have a 1/4 tank or less of gas or if I dove fast constantly for like 10 mins

Was it an AT or MT?

If AT, it could be the solenoid, which you can now buy at FCP Groton. Or it could also be an electronic control problem, in which case you need to pull codes & clear them and see if the same codes return. I would also check the correct fluid condition & level.

If MT, I am not familiar with Volvo's MT, but it is probably an internal problem if the rest of the gears are shifting fine. Usually that is a problem caused by worn out synchroniser on each gear. If the clutch/hydraulic systemwas bad, you would have difficulty shifting any gear.

I'll let other experts provide different perspective.

hmm. i know in my ex's 95 850 turbo, if we would let it sit for a day or overnight, it wouldnt want to switch out of 1st into 2nd. we would just put it in L then back to D. I know you .....,probably shouldnt do that in 4th gear...... but he told me that it was some switch that tends to go out after those cars get so old. I dont know. Not trying to sound stupid.. I'm still learning alot about cars. Actually. Now Im just rambling. lol. goodnight.

It has to be some kind of electrical issue. I know on my old 940, this would also happen and it was the overdrive relay. I don't know if the 850 has a relay but I would think it does.

I called a few places and no store any overdrive relays. Does the 850 even have one? If not what else can be the cause of this problem??
