Default Cel p0410

While driving to the barber shop this morning the CEL came on. After my son and I got our cuts we headed to Advanced to see what their scanner had to say; P0410 - Secondary Air Induction Malfunction (or something like that). From there, off we went to find a Chilton or Haynes manual. Out of all the stores in my area no one had one for my car (96 850 GLT). Came home and hoped on the site to see what others had to say about it the code: Air Pump - either hoses are bad or need a new air pump. I then got to Groton to price said parts: $412.75.

Being that I just put out for a new clutch, control arm, and strut mount last week, this will have to be put off for a month.

Questions:
1. If the pump is bad and I continue to drive will I mess something else up (This car is our third car, so I could drive my other until I get it fixed)?
2. Is this a DIY (Can I takle this in my driveway)?
3. Groton makes you buy the Air Pump Check Valve to get the 1 yr warranty on the Air Pump; do I have replace them together or is this just good practice?

Thanks for your help

It is a really good idea to replace them together.
You should not do any damage at all.

Yes it is a DIY job.

Tech,

Thanks for the fast reply. I saw where you advised another member how to check if the air pump is faulty. I will do it in the morning; it's too hot out there now....LOL

Thanks

I bought a used one at Erie Volvo and replaced it myself. Pretty sure they give a lifetime warranty. I drove mine for years with it bad before replacing it.

Let me get this right, you got a used air pump from a dealer and they gave you a lifetime warranty on it? That's a sweet deal.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?

Thanks

Default Update

Well, I just went outside to take a look at the hoses that are part of the Pulsed Air Injection System and I think I found the culprit to my CEL. Upon inspection, I found the purple hose that connects the Controller to the SAS Valve severed where it attaches to the SAS Valve.

Thanks for the help tech and JimKW

That could be the cause. The only way to know for sure is to clear the code and wait and see.

I really hope so. I just hate I have to wait to order the hose.

I was thinkin of doing that but I have nothing to secure it once I cut the funny clamp that's holding it now. Any suggestions?

It should hold if you just slide it on. If you want to feel safe use a Zip tie to hold it on.

I'll try a zip tie and have the code cleared tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, I got up this morning and ripped the hose were it was torn and removed the piece that had the clamp attached. There was still more than enough to just pop it back on the fitting, so I did and it's secure w/out using a clamp. Afterwards, I went to Advanced to get the CEL reset only to be told that they do not reset CELs. I'll go by my mechanic tomorrow and have him do it.

I nosed around the car today and found a common problem. My oil filler cap had a crack in it, so I went and got a new one from my local dealer. I planned on doing an oil change but I got lazy this weekend. Anyway, I took off the spark plug cover to find oil under neither. I wasn't a lot of oil, but it was there. I know it's from the cap, so I got as much of the oil as I could and put the new one on. I plan on getting some Simple Green to clean it up better.

I did detail the inside and outside today, and here's a few shots of the outside:
